In 1982, literary figure Alice Walker penned a most exceptional work. Her moving narrative, The Color Purple, depicted the life and experiences of an African American woman maturing in the south in the early 1900s. The Pulitzer Prize-Winning novel heavily explored issues with substantial emotional, mental, familial, and societal impacts. Despite its intensity, it was compelling, and in 1985, it was adapted for the big screen.
The book was a big deal for many reasons. It was edgy material for the time. The piece framed a subject that would make many writhe with discomfort in a vibrant and visual context. It was an earnest attempt to do justice to the dark thematic topics Walker’s book broached, including incest, child marriage, abuse, sexuality, gender, racism, and colorism. One could almost define these particulars as a kaleidoscope of horrors, but it was relevant and necessary. Given the depth of the work, one could not deny Walker’s mastery of storytelling.

But, it took a skilled body of creative professionals to bring it all together, so those words leaped from the screen. Stephen Spielberg sharpened his lens, Quincy Jones lent his acute ear, and a gifted cast fated for the moment took on the immense project sealing its success. And although the work had its critics, The Color Purple became a monumental film with a continual impact.
While some may find it shocking to hear of an adaptation in the works, one must wonder if it is unexpected. Given what we know of cinematic trends and the influential power behind the film’s most iconic characters, it’s not so unusual. Now that a new The Color Purple adaptation is on the way, here is what to expect.
The Color Purple: The Plot
Warner Bros. Pictures
With the new adaption, the original story will not change, for that is the essence of The Color Purple. What will vary from the original screenplay is the medium of presentation. This will not merely be a dramatic rendering, but one utilizing robust musical numbers.

Siedah Garrett, Stephen Bray, and Brenda Russell are confirmed as the artists behind the penning of the music. It would be more appropriate to say that the upcoming adaptation is more of a rework of the Broadway offering. As noted in US Weekly, “the picture will follow the Broadway adaptation, which took its inspiration directly from Walker’s novel.” As in Broadway plays, a theatrical technique or two, such as magical realism, will be used to enhance the storytelling. Additionally, audiences will see multiple iterations of certain characters, such as Celie’s sister Nettie.
The musical earned eleven Tony nominations during its initial run from 2005 to 2008. The production was revived in 2015, earning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.
The Color Purple: The Cast
A film is only as great as its cast. Based on casting news, the 2023 adaptation will benefit from the crème de la crème. The cast comprises individuals who have wowed the world in their careers. Now they will come together to tell this classic and triumphant tale again through song.
The roster includes Taraji P. Henson (Shug Avery), Halle Bailey (young Nettie), H.E.R (Squeak), Ciara (Nettie), Aunjanue Ellis (Mama), Colman Domingo (Mister), Corey Hawkins (Harpo), Jon Batiste (Grady), David Allen Grier (Rev. Samuel Avery), Deon Cole (Alfonso), Tamela J Mann (First Lady), Louis Gossett Jr.(Mister Johnson), and Stephen Hill (Buster). As a treat for the fans of the Broadway adaptation, Danielle Brooks and Fantasia Barrino Taylor will return to reprise their roles of Sofia and Celie, respectively.
Release Date
Variety confirmed that fans will be able to see the film in theaters on December 20, 2023.

There are some other intriguing details to disclose. For starters, Stephen Spielberg and Quincy Jones have a part to play in this upcoming production. Both will fulfill roles as producers alongside Scott Sanders and, of course, the incomparable Oprah Winfrey. Scott Sanders produced the Broadway version of The Color Purple for those unaware. Marcus Gardley, also known for his work on the Showtime Drama (The Chi), held the pen, writing the screenplay. The creative director of the famed conceptual music film Black is King, Blitz Bazawule, will serve as director for this film.
Filming began in the spring of this year, and per an earlier announcement, filming has wrapped in July. Unfortunately, the expectant will have to wait an entire year for the release. However, it’s certain to be worth the wait. As Oprah echoed in a Vanity Fair article earlier this year,"[The Color Purple] has been a vehicle for magic and purpose in my life. I don’t know anybody who’s ever been associated with it whose life wasn’t enhanced." With such a boast, it’s guaranteed to be quite the watch.
