In the first season of The Boys, there was a distinct power imbalance between Maeve and Starlight, since the former was an established member of the superhero team The Seven, while Starlight was a rookie newcomer. Over time, Maeve came to care for Starlight, and even helped her out several times, including saving her life. According to McElligott, at that point, a simple thanks from Starlight would have gone a long way towards evolving their relationship.
“I think with Maeve, she’s dealing with her own stuff. When she sees Starlight, in Season 1 especially, Starlight was a little like a damsel in distress and Maeve was there saying, ‘Come on, pull yourself together.’ And it’s a little one-sided in that Maeve is always trying to help Starlight in some way. She’s saving her or giving her advice. So it’s essentially one-sided, which is probably why Maeve is a little short with Starlight at times.”

The thing fans love about The Boys is that the characters are realistic and deeply flawed. It is unlikely that Starlight and Queen Maeve will suddenly become super BFFs anytime soon, but since the events of the finale of Season 2, the two are now definitely standing on the same side of the conflict now, which unfortunately happens to be against Homelander, The Seven, and their parent company Vought. Regardless of any lingering ill-feeling between them, Maeve and Starlight are going to have to watch each other’s backs if they are to stand a chance of survival going into Season 3.
“I mean, I don’t even remember Starlight saying thank you. It doesn’t seem to be in her vocabulary. Going forward, I think that Maeve is essentially a really decent person. She’s always going to turn up when she’s needed. She’s not going to let somebody die on her watch if she can help it. And she’s always going to be there, but the superficial niceties that probably Starlight is expecting from her will never probably be a part of the equation for them. So I don’t see a friendship, because I don’t think it’s two-sided.”
