The action literally got a shot in the arm, as anti-hero Billy Butcher and group conscience Hughie Campbell got hooked on temporary Compound V that turned them into supes for a day at a time. The addition of the unstable Soldier Boy was a welcome one, adding to the series’ unpredictability. And we got a nice “FINALLY!” moment as Butcher went toe to toe with Homelander and almost took him down.

Season 3 of the Boys will be tough to top, but the cast and crew are already embarking on their season four journey. The Boys season 4 just started production on August 22, 2022, as season 3 ended with Butcher on borrowed time from abusing the temp V, Annie joining the Boys, and Homelander going full despot to enthusiastic applause from his cult. His son Ryan will be a wild card as he’s right alongside his father at the end of the season. What does the series have planned for the supes and the Boys in season four? Here’s everything we know.

Season 4: The Plot

Season 4 of The Boys just started filming, so plot details are slim. A major theme could be a fully unleashed and out-of-control Homelander, as he ended season 3 lasering a protester’s head in half for throwing a cup at his equally powered son. Season 3 saw the villain becoming unhinged and more brazen with his depravity, demanding a change of heart suicidal teen jump to her death, among other horrible acts.

With Homelander fully off the reservation and potentially no longer messing around, will we finally see the Boys take Compound V? And not the temporary stuff, the real deal with which they’re already powered at the start of the comic series. If they’re going up against a rabid Homelander, they will need more than their wits to survive.

We should also see further development of Ryan’s character. To this point, he’s been pulled back and forth between being the good guy when he grows up and being a carbon copy of his father. He has been fully pulled into the latter camp as of the end of season 3 and, under his father’s “guidance,” could double the threat that the Boys and the world at large will face.

Season 4: The Cast

Expect all the series regulars to be back for the fourth season. Karl Urban will return as Billy Butcher, Jack Quaid as Hughie, and Antony Starr as Homelander. Rounding out the roster will be Erin Moriarty as Annie January, Karen Fukuhara as Kimiko Miyashiro, Laz Alonso as Mother’s Milk, and Tomer Capone as Frenchie.

Some cast members are potential question marks. Kripke had this to say to Deadline:

We last saw Maeve (Dominique McElligott) depowered from a Soldier Boy blast and departing with her girlfriend. Without her abilities, it will be interesting to see what the series has in store for the character going forward. As for Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), Kripke isn’t the only one angling for the Captain America gone mad to return. In a season 4 amp-up Instagram post from Karl Urban, Ackles commented:

“We definitely won’t reach the end of the series without seeing Maeve again. I’m hoping we see Soldier Boy again.”

We last saw, the erratic warrior and Homelander’s father returned to a cryogenic state after being neutralized by Maeve. Will season 4 see him thawed out for more chaos in the struggle against the supes?

‘Pour me a double… I’m on my way.’

A few new supes will be introduced in the coming season. Susan Heyward will appear as Sister Sage, and Valorie Curry will play Firecracker. We don’t know anything about these additions to the cast as they don’t appear in the pages of The Boys comics; they have been created solely for the series.

The First Episode Reveal

The only other teaser of substance we have received so far is the first episode’s title from Kripke’s Twitter account: “Department of Dirty Tricks.” From the script cover image, it was also revealed that David Reed and Philip Sgriccia would return as writer and director. If the show’s trajectory continues as it has been building, season 4 of The Boys will be brimming with blood, guts, wince-inducing visual gags, and plenty of super-powered action.

Release Date

There is no release date for The Boys season 4 as the production has just started. If the series release history is any indication, we should see new episodes sometime in late 2023 or possibly early 2024.
