Based on Garth Ennis’ comic book series, The Boys is a satirical take on superhero culture. It tells the story of a group of superheroes known as the Seven, who publicly parade themselves as the epitome of heroism, but who are secretly a bunch of sadistic psychopaths, indifferent nihilists, or in the case of one hero, a literal Nazi.

Urban plays the role of Billy Butcher, a secret government agent tasked with keeping the supers in check through a combination of intimidation and blackmail. While technically one of the good guys, Butcher is far from a heroic figure, carrying out a personal vendetta against superpowered beings with no care for who gets hurt in the process. In a recent interview, Urban noted that while he started out in a rough place, Butcher has had a clear arc from Season 1 to 2 towards becoming a better person.
At the end of Season 2 of The Boys, Butcher has adopted Becca’s superpowered son, while surviving a direct confrontation with the main villain of the series, the most powerful superhero in the world, Homelander. It will be interesting to see how well Butcher fares in Season 3 now that the war between humans and supes has become much more public.
“The general theme for Butcher in season two was one of humanizing Butcher. We get to see a more desperate and vulnerable Butcher. We get to see Butcher in love, and we get to see Butcher make different choices than he made in season one. If season one was a lot more based on selfish choices for Butcher, [in] season two, we see that he has learned from his mistakes and there is a certain line in the sand, a morality that he will not betray, and particularly around his fellow teammates. In season one, he would have thrown anybody under the bus in order to achieve what he wanted to achieve, but in season two, he realizes the value of and worth of those teammates and makes different choices.”
