Bazinga! If that phrase triggers images of Sheldon Cooper flailing around in a ball pit, you’re familiar with the famously “nerdy” show The Big Bang Theory. The sitcom ran for 279 episodes and invited the audience in to observe the lives of physicists Sheldon, Leonard and Raj, as well as the engineer, Howard, and the microbiologist, Bernadette. Rounding out the group is Penny, the actress/waitress/sales representative that lives next door.
The Big Bang Theory has been nominated for and won countless awards over the span of its 12 seasons. With such an incredibly talented cast bringing the group of unique characters to life, it’s no wonder the series was so popular. While the actors and actresses will always be loved and remembered for their roles in the show, they aren’t the only roles that this cast has dazzled in.
Here are The Big Bang Theory cast’s greatest hits outside the show!
Jim Parsons - Spoiler Alert
Focus Features
Jim Parsons was the actor who triggered the end of The Big Bang Theory in 2019. He was ready to move on from his iconic portrayal of Sheldon Cooper for a multitude of reasons, including the freedom to work on other projects. Most recently, he played the lead in the romantic drama based on the memoir of the TV journalist Michael Aussiello: Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies in the End. The film shortened the title to Spoiler Alert and was released to theaters in December 2022.
Spoiler alert follows Michael (Parsons) as he reflects on meeting the love of his life, Kit Cowan, as well as Kit’s terminal cancer diagnosis and as his eventual death. The first half of the movie plays like a romantic comedy with the outgoing and confident Kit bantering with the shy and guarded Michael. Later, the story turns into a heart-wrenching drama that guarantees the need for a box of tissues when Michael and Kit make the most of his last 11 months of life. Parsons was praised for his emotional portrayal of Michael and the movie was met with a positive reaction from both critics and audiences.
Mayim Bialik - Call me Kat
Fox
Mayim Bialik, who is a real life neuroscientist in addition to being an actress, was the perfect choice to play fictional neuroscientist, Amy Farrah Fowler, in The Big Bang Theory. She made the character unique, endearing, and amazingly weird, all qualities that she is able to translate into her new lead role on the TV series Call Me Kat.
Call Me Kat is a comedy that focuses on 39-year-old Kat (Bialik) who quits the job she hates and uses the money her parents set aside for her wedding to open a cat café. The series follows Kat’s day-to-day as she fights to be her own person despite societal and parental expectations.
Call Me Kat was initially released on Fox in January 2021 and currently has a second season. The majority of season three has been released, but production has been paused due to the tragic death of Leslie Jordan.
Johnny Galecki - Rings
Paramount Pictures
Johnny Galecki played the main nerd of the group at the center of The Big Bang Theory, Leonard. The pinnacle nice guy with the on and off romance with Penny is a far cry from his role in the supernatural horror movie Rings. Rings is the third and final installment in The Ring trilogy that was released in 2017, 12 years after The Ring Two.
Rings revolves around a teenage couple that are being separated when Holt goes off to college and Julia is left behind to take care of her mother. When Holt stops responding to her, she travels to his campus to investigate. That’s where she runs into Professor Gabriel (Galecki), who is conducting research on the infamous film that, when watched, will kill the watcher in seven days if they don’t show it to someone else during that time. Gabriel acts as a mentor to Holt and Julia and helps to guide them through the terrifying situations they find themselves in.
While the movie received abysmal reviews by critics, it still opened second in the box office for its theatrical release.
Simon Helberg - We’ll Never Have Paris
Bifrost Pictures
During the time Simon Helberg played the creepy (and eventually sweet) Howard Wolowitz in the Big Bang Theory, he also starred as the lead in a romantic comedy. Released in 2014, We’ll Never Have Paris was also directed by Helberg and was based on his own love story with his wife, Jocelyn Towne. Towne co-directed the movie, as well.
We’ll Never Have Paris focuses on a couple who have been together since high school. Quinn (Helberg), decides to walk away from his girlfriend, Devon, in favor of his co-worker who confessed his love to him. Quinn quickly realizes that he never should have left Devon and spends the rest of the movie trying to win her back, even going as far as following her to Paris.
Helberg and Towne won the Audience Award for Best Comedy Feature at the Newport Beach Film Festival for their direction of the movie.
Kunal Nayyar - Trolls
Dreamworks
While Kunal Nayyar did not have a lot say as Rajesh Koothrapali, a crippingly shy and self-loathing astrophysicist, in the first couple of seasons of The Big Bang Theory, his character in Trolls, Trolls: The Beat Goes on!, Trolls World Tour, and Trolls: Trollstopia has an abundance of confidence and loves being the center of attention.
Nayyar voices Guy Diamond, a pop troll in a universe where each troll is assigned to a different genre of music. His character is the friend of the main character, Poppy, and loves everything glitter, partying, and anything to do with himself. Guy Diamond has various roles to fill in each movie, but he really develops into someone more three-dimensional when he has a son, Tiny Diamond, a hip hop troll that he adores.
Both Trolls and Trolls World Tour were extremely popular at their release and were nominated for a variety of awards. A third Trolls movie is set to be released in November 2023.
Melissa Rauch - Batman and Harley Quinn
Warner Bros
Melissa Rauch played the adorable and terrifying Bernadette Rostenkowski in The Big Bang Theory. Similarly, in one of her many voice acting roles, she plays the adorable and terrifying Harley Quinn in the animated movie Batman and Harley Quinn.
After confidential information was stolen from S.T.A.R. Labs and a scientist that specializes in botany and warfare goes missing, Batman and Nightwing decide to enlist the help of Harley Quinn (Rauch) to locate her friend, Poison Ivy. Harley has given up the superhero/supervillain life and is just trying to get by as a waitress. It takes some convincing, but eventually, she agrees to help the duo out.
Kayley Cuoco - The Flight Attendant
Warner Bros. Television
The always lovable Kaley Cuoco left her Ugg-wearing, food-stealing character, Penny, behind after twelve seasons of The Big Bang Theory and continued on to star in a series titled The Flight Attendant. Released in November 2020 on HBO Max, the series follows a flight attendant named Cassandra Bowden (Cuoco) who is notorious for drinking on her job and having relations with her passengers. One night, her recklessness is taken too far when she wakes up in a hotel in Bangkok next to a dead body that was clearly murdered. Because of her inebriation the previous night, she can’t remember what happened or who the murderer was. With only flashbacks and hallucinations to go on, she must piece it together to save herself.
HBO Max released the second season in April 2022, but it is unclear if there will be a season three. Cuoco earned a nomination at the 2022 Emmy Awards for Best Actress in Comedy for this role.
