Life happens. Not even Hollywood is immune to that. Sometimes an actor has a scheduling conflict, a disagreement over a contract, or, unfortunately, dies during filming. In these cases, casting directors have to find someone else to take their place and fulfill the duties of the role as best as possible. Sometimes, this goes over great. Other times, not so much.
Or sometimes, there are cases where a movie or entire franchise is re-imagined years after its original debut. For example, at least 10 actors have played Batman in live-action movies. Each time the role is recast and re-imagined, it brings a new version of the Caped Crusader to the screen. This is pretty common in superhero movies, having also happened with Superman and classic villains like The Riddler and The Joker.
Sometimes, these recast and re-imagined roles can be hard to cope with, especially for older viewers who remember the originals, or those who preferred the original actor to the recast. However, there are several instances where recasting a role was extremely well-done and some may say even better than the original.
Recasting roles is no easy feat, but here are eight of the best performances as a result of recasting.

8 Lando Calrissian - Donald Glover
Lucasfilm Ltd.
Lando Calrissian is known as the smooth-talking, charismatic smuggler who eventually rose up to become a general in the Rebel Alliance. Originally portrayed by Billy Dee Williams, Lando has had a significant role in much of the Star Wars franchise and is a very well-liked character.

In 2018, the movie Solo: A Star Wars Story premiered, detailing events that took place years before the original movies where main characters, like Han Solo and Lando, are significantly younger. Given the age differences of the characters, the roles were recast, making Donald Glover (Atlanta) Lando. Glover radiates charisma and really shines in the role. He expertly captures the mannerisms and personality of a young Lando Calrissian, and does Williams’ original portrayal justice. Following his performance in Solo, there’s a Lando series in development at Disney+, with Glover set to reprise his role.
7 Bruce Banner/The Hulk - Mark Ruffalo
In the 2008 movie, The Incredible Hulk, Edward Norton (Fight Club) played the radiation-tainted Bruce Banner. The movie received some praise for its well-conceived action scenes and was certainly an improvement from Universal Pictures’ 2003 movie Hulk. However, the movie was criticized for lacking depth, and underperformed at the box office, grossing $264.8 worldwide, making it the lowest-grossing MCU movie to date.
In 2012, when The Avengers premiered, Norton was replaced as Banner by Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight). There are various alleged reasons why Norton was replaced, including a disagreement with Marvel over the final edit of the movie. However, Ruffalo truly stepped into the role and made it his own. His scruffy and charming nature sticks out among the rest of the Avengers. He’s able to capture the normal guy persona of Banner, while simultaneously transforming into the powerful Hulk, really living up to the character’s potential from the original comics.
6 Rachel Dawes - Maggie Gyllenhaal
Warner Bros Pictures
In Christopher Nolan’s (Inception) 2005 movie Batman Begins, Bruce Wayne’s (Christian Bale) childhood friend and love interest Rachel Dawes is played by Katie Holmes (Dawson’s Creek). The movie was a massive success and was followed by The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, making up the coveted Dark Knight Trilogy.
Following scheduling conflicts and a desire to explore different roles, Holmes decided not to return as Rachel in the following movies, so Maggie Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko) stepped in. Gyllenhaal really brought Rachel’s character to life, and took it beyond just the simple damsel-in-distress role that is so common in superhero movies. Rachel is smart and strong, and Gyllenhaal conveyed that with a sense of believability that made her interesting to watch in each scene.
5 James Bond - Daniel Craig
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
James Bond is one of those characters that has been re-imagined and recast many times, with seven actors having assumed the role thus far. Each actor has their own interpretation and brings new life to the character that is different from the time before. Most recently, Daniel Craig (Knives Out) has been fulfilling the role of the super-spy.
Craig starred in five Bond films, starting with Casino Royale in 2006 and ending with No Time To Die in 2021. Craig was an excellent Bond. He reignited the franchise and generated interest among a younger audience given the modern appeal of the last five movies. But, following No Time To Die, Craig left the role as Bond, and it’s now up for grabs. There aren’t any names set in stone yet, though there have been talks of actors like Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) and Rege Jean Page (Bridgerton). But, it seems that The Dark Tower actor Idris Elba may be at the top of the list.
4 Spider-Man - Tom Holland
Marvel Studios
As one of the MCU’s most recognizable superheroes, Spider-Man has also been re-imagined and recast several times. The original live-action movie trilogy, which ran from 2002 to 2007, starred Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker. Maguire captured the nerdy, somewhat anxious personality of Parker, and his performance stands out as a favorite portrayal among a lot of fans of the character. In 2012, the franchise was revived with The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014, with Andrew Garfield cast in the lead role. Garfield brings a much younger and robust take on the character, but the role was later recast again when Tom Holland stepped into the role in Captain America: Civil War.
Holland is most people’s favorite Spider-Man. His portrayal is young, funny, and energized, but still holds great depth. The Holland Spider-Man movies have been massive box office successes, with Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home and most recently, No Way Home, bringing swarms of people to theaters and establishing Holland’s character as a standout in the MCU.
3 Dumbledore - Michael Gambon
Warner Bros. Pictures
In some cases, the worst happens, and an actor dies, leading to a recast of their role. This is what happened when Richard Harris, who played Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter movies, passed away. The role of the headmaster is crucial to the series, so Harris was replaced by Michael Gambon.
Harris and Gambon’s portrayals of the character are strikingly different, especially to those who are invested in the series. Harris approached Dumbledore with a more whimsical, caring nature, acting as more of a grandfather figure to the students at Hogwarts. Gambon, on the other hand, dove more into the darker side of Dumbledore’s nature, showcasing more of the conflicting aspects of his personality. Gambon’s Dumbledore is still wise and inspirational, but doesn’t have the same stroke of whimsy as Harris did. This makes it hard to choose a favorite between the two because they both offer something so different.
2 Hannibal Lecter - Anthony Hopkins
Strong Heart
Hannibal Lecter is another one of those characters that has been recast and re-imagined several times. He was originally portrayed by Brian Cox in the 1986 movie Manhunter, but was recast in the 1991 movie Silence of the Lambs, by Anthony Hopkins.
Hopkins’ portrayal of the cannibalistic psychiatrist is chilling and unsettling, yet too good to turn away from. He gave an Academy Award-winning performance, and is most people’s favorite portrayal of the character. Hopkins reprised his role in the sequels Hannibal and Red Dragon, delivering a stellar, immediately recognizable performance each time.
1 Heath Ledger - The Joker
Warner Bros.
Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight is truly a masterclass in acting. The Joker, like most Batman villains, has been recast and re-imagined many times, with actors like Jack Nicholson, Joaquin Phoenix, and Mark Hamill stepping into the role. However, Ledger’s is arguably the best. He’s gritty, chaotic, and even delivers a certain scare factor because his unpredictable personality keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Ledger nailed every one of the Joker’s mannerisms, and truly embodied the character. He commands your attention in every scene and maintains an unwavering amount of energy throughout the entire movie. Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker is truly unlike any other actor’s. Since The Dark Knight premiered in 2008, a few actors have tried to step into the role, but truly none compare to Ledger’s interpretation.
