As another month comes to a close, it’s time for new catalog of updates for many of the popular streaming services. HBO Max has a list of everything leaving the service this June, so now is your last chance to watch those movies on this streaming platform before they move somewhere else. However, as these movies leave, a whole new list of films joins the service, bringing a fresh stock of new all new adventures and drama to enjoy.

There aren’t many, but HBO Max will release a few new movies this month that hold a lot of potential. A reboot of Father of the Bride will begin streaming on June 16th, starring Andy Garcia. It features a Cuban-American family, and goes through a similar plot to the book it is based on, as well as the first movie adaptation. The documentary The Janes will also release this month, bringing an in-depth look at women’s rights and abortion on June 8th, and Olivier Assayas’ limited series remake of Irma Vep on June 6th is sure to be interesting. If what’s new doesn’t interest you though, there are plenty of classics coming to the service this month as well. These are the best movies coming to HBO Max in June (all on June 1st, to be exact).

7 The Bee Movie

     Paramount Pictures

The Bee Movie lives up to its simple title: it’s an animated movie all about bees. The main character, Barry B. Benson (an endearing Jerry Seinfeld), leaves the nest for the first time to collect pollen, so they can make honey, but he realizes there’s a lot more to the world out there than he once thought. He discovers bee farms and watches how they are drugged before the honey they worked so hard for is stolen from them. Finding out the humans use all the bees’ hard work to sell and eat this honey, he decides to sue the human race for everything they’ve done without the bees’ knowledge in this funny little movie with a sneaking commentary on class consciousness.

6 13 Going on 30

A wish gone wrong is featured in 13 Going On 30, where a young 13-year-old girl struggles with trying to become popular and, after wishing she was “30, flirty, and thriving,” wakes up the next morning to find that it has come true. However, she doesn’t have any memory of the past 17 years. As she struggles to figure out what is going on in her life and find a balance, she slowly finds that popularity wasn’t a good look on her, and begins to fall in love with her best friend. Jennifer Garner gives a really fun performance here in this light and fluffy flick.

5 Highlander

     Thorn EMI Screen Entertainment

Highlander is an endlessly quotable fantasy action-adventure movie at the climax of a seemingly endless war between two immortal enemies. Connor MacLeod is banished from his village in the middle of the 16th century when he wakes up after receiving a fatal wound. He is soon found by a swordsman who is also immortal, explaining there are several of them that were born like this and can only be killed by being beheaded. After this, he gets pulled into a secret war the other immortals have going on, and MacLeod is determined to make sure his oldest enemy is not the one to win. Highlander remains an ’80s cult classic thanks to its over-the-top plot, gorgeous scenery, and great performances from Sean Connery and others. A modern tragedy reboot of Highlander is in production.

4 Hairspray

     New Line Cinema

Originally a subversive comedy film turned Broadway musical, the 2007 film Hairspray is more an adaptation of said musical. Teenager Tracy Turnblad wants to dance on the local TV show that a lot of kids at her high school are in, but is rejected due to her weight. After earning detention for skipping class to audition, she meets other kids who are only allowed on the show on supposed ‘Negro days,’ and they become fast friends. Over the course of the movie, Tracy fights to put an end to the biased studio head and let the show become more inclusive. John Travolta is wonderful as Tracy’s agoraphobic mother, hearkening back to Divine’s legendary cross-dressing performance in the original John Waters film.

3 A Star is Born

     Warner Bros. Pictures

Another musical coming this month is A Star is Born, which was nominated for and won numerous awards at the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes, and the Grammy Awards. Jack Maine is a famous country rock singer who is struggling with a drug and alcohol addiction. He enters a bar after one of his concerts and there discovers Ally, an aspiring songwriter. After being amazed by her performance, he invites her to join his tour, and they slowly fall in love. Of course, no relationship is without issues, as Jack still struggles against his addictions and Ally’s newfound popularity begins to drive a rift between them.

2 The Grand Budapest Hotel

     Fox Searchlight Pictures

The movie The Grand Budapest Hotel tells the story of a once-great hotel and its beloved concierge, and how war led to its (and his) tragic downhill slide through time. Monsieur Gustave is a concierge at the hotel who tends to seduce wealthy old clients, including the hotel’s owner. When she dies, and he is written into the will, one of the family members is outraged and tries to have Gustave arrested.

Later, Gustave actually is arrested as the police believe he murdered her for the inheritance. With the help of one of the new lobby boys, Zero, he escapes and begins to try and find a way to clear his name as well as search for the missing will, supposedly drafted in the event of a murder. Many consider The Grand Budapest Hotel to be Wes Anderson’s greatest film, and it’s certainly a visual masterpiece with powerful themes.

1 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

     Sony Pictures Classics

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is set in the 19th century Qing dynasty in China. A warrior who retires gifts his sword to his lover, but it’s not very long before that very sword is stolen from where it now rests. The thief is traced back to the House of Yu, where it is revealed that the thief is working with Jade Fox, who previously killed the warrior’s master for not being willing to teach women. Both Jade Fox and the thief are women who have learned the technique through books regardless, and the real plot begins to unfold as hasty alliances and betrayals interweave throughout the movie. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is one of the most influential action films of all time, and brought international stardom to the great Michelle Yeoh, who is now making waves as the lead in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
