Because Matt Reeves felt that he had his perfect Dark Knight in Robert Pattinson, the director recalls feeling “devastated” over the actor’s casting in Tenet. As of now, The Batman is playing in movie theaters everywhere, introducing Pattinson as the newest incarnation of the World’s Greatest Detective. Reeves, who co-wrote and directed the film, knew pretty early on that Pattinson was who he wanted for the role, based on the range he’d seen the actor exhibit in prior movies.
Recently, Reeves spoke out more about the casting on the ReelBlend Podcast. The director revealed how afraid he was that Pattinson would turn down The Batman as he’d just been cast in Tenet, the newest feature from The Dark Knight helmer Christopher Nolan. As Reeves explains:

The concern Reeves had wasn’t so much about Pattinson’s availability. What Reeves thought was that because Pattinson had just teamed up with the man who many fans say made one of the greatest superhero movies of all time with The Dark Knight, he wouldn’t have an interest in doing a Batman film, as everyone knows just how high Nolan had set the bar with his movie.

As we now know, everything worked out with The Batman and Robert Pattinson. Even so, Pattinson would also admit that he never had really seen himself in the role of Batman, and he very well may have been uninterested in the part if another filmmakers were at the helm. What drew him to The Batman, oddly enough, was that it was Matt Reeves directing the film.
“Even like five years ago, I was the last person I would think would be cast as Batman,” Pattinson recently explained. “I’m never normally in consideration for superhero parts at all. Usually [in those roles] you’re either a total unknown or someone who just, I don’t know, seems more obvious. I don’t understand what it was about Batman, but I got really fixated on it and kept pushing my agent about it. I loved Matt’s work on the Planet of the Apes movies so much, and a lot of Matt’s work. and I was thinking, if you can get that performance out of a monkey… Then I met Matt and just he had such an interesting take on the character, and it just felt very different and kind of dangerous. It felt like a big, big mountain to climb.”
