The latest promotional material for the upcoming comic book outing, The Batman, invites you to crack one of The Riddler’s cryptic clues. The riddle is stamped on a newly released theatrical display standee, which shows Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight silhouetted against the movie’s title, and asks fans with some time on their hands to assist Batman in cracking the serial killer’s latest puzzle which, knowing The Riddler, is simply another taunt.
The latest synopsis for The Batman has revealed much more about Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight and where he is in his career as a costumed crime-fighter; “Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies – Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) – amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.”

If Batman did not already have enough to deal with, The Riddler is about to make things even more difficult, murdering key Gothamites and leaving riddles at the scene. “When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano),” the detailed synosis continues. “As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”
Director Matt Reeves has also offered some insight into his approach when bringing the DC icon to the big screen again. “I felt that we’d seen lots of origin stories,” Reeves said during a panel at this year’s DC FanDome. “We’d seen things go further and further into fantasy, and I thought, well, one place we haven’t been is grounding it the way that year one does to come right in to a young Batman, not be an origin tale, but refer to his origins and shake him to his core…..I really did think, ‘Oh my God, this version of this character, this guy who sort of almost like, if you think of Bruce Wayne as like a reckless rock star in a decaying manner, there’s this part of me that self-saw (Pattinson) as that, and I had no idea that you would be interested in playing the role at all.”
The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/The Batman, alongside Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Colin Farrell as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot/Penguin, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. Additionally, the supporting cast also includes Jayme Lawson, Barry Keoghan, and Alex Ferns. The Batman is scheduled for release in the United States on March 4, 2022.
