An alleged first reaction to The Batman has called director Matt Reeves’ take on the DC superhero icon “complex” and “controversial.” This exciting and intriguing description comes courtesy of Editor-in-Chief of AwardsAce.com, and continues with comparisons between The Batman and several cinematic classics from Chinatown to The Silence of the Lambs.

While short on detail, the use of the word “controversial” is sure to have fans wondering exactly what The Batman will have in store for this cavalcade of iconic characters. This first reaction will no doubt have Batman fans even more excited than they are already, with comparisons to the likes of Zodiac and Chinatown certainly tracking with what has been shown of The Batman so far.

“Received a text from a source who’s seen #TheBatman calling it a “complex” film, comparing it to: ZODIAC, CHINATOWN, THE USUAL SUSPECTS, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS Source also stating it will be “controversial” and people will discuss it “endlessly.””

The Batman will be led by The Lighthouse and Tenet star Robert Pattinson as Batman/Bruce Wayne. The story will find Wayne coming face-to-face with several of his infamous rogue’s gallery, including Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle AKA Catwoman, a nightclub worker and cat burglar who meets Batman while searching for her missing friend; Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, an ally of Batman in the Gotham City Police Department (GCPD); John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, a Gotham City crime lord; Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Gotham’s district attorney; Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s butler and mentor; Colin Farrell as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot AKA The Penguin, a rising crime lord; and Paul Dano as Edward Nashton AKA The Riddler, a serial killer who targets elite Gotham citizens.

The Batman will drop audiences into Gotham City, introducing a version of the costumed vigilante just two years into his unorthodox career. Spending his time stalking the streets and striking fear into the hearts of criminals has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies, including Alfred Pennyworth and Lt. James Gordon, amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer named The Riddler targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Catwoman, The Penguin, and mob boss Carmine Falcone. As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

Directed by Matt Reeves, who wrote the screenplay with Peter Craig, The Batman is scheduled for release in the United States on March 4, 2022, following a series of delays. Controversy and complexity are clearly going to be quite popular, as early estimates have predicted that The Batman will earn an impressive $150 million during its opening weekend.
