Director Matt Reeves has teased several spinoffs off the back of his upcoming DC movie, The Batman. In an interview with Esquire, the filmmaker first asserted his pride over the finished film, before revealing that there are many things currently in the works, teasing further spinoffs besides just the already announced Gotham P.D.

“I’m very proud of it,” Reeves said of The Batman. “I felt it was the best version of the story that we could possibly do to justify having another Batman. You always have to have a reason, and from the beginning that was the mission for me.” Now that The Batman is ready to go, with Matt Reeves seemingly very happy with what has been achieved, the director has started looking at where the franchise could go next. Standing separate from the rest of the DC Cinematic Universe, Reeves has plans in place to spawn his own Gotham-centric franchise. “It will obviously have a lot to do with how people receive this film,” the director said. “But a lot of things are in the works.”

Of course, Reeves is trying not to get ahead of himself and awaits the critical and audience response to The Batman. But, considering how palpable the excitement is for the comic book movie, and how promising the footage has looked so far, it’s a pretty safe bet that there will be plenty more from The Batman to come.

HBO Max Series Gotham P.D. is So Far the Only Spinoff to be Announced

What else Matt Reeves has planned for The Batman remains to be seen, but so far just one spinoff has been announced, Gotham P.D., and details around that are scarce. The release of a Gotham P.D. series was first revealed back in 2020, with the show due to be released on HBO Max. Centered around the Gotham City police department, HBO Max’s press release at the time hinted that this series would lead to a “Batman universe across platforms.” The director later confirmed that Gotham P.D. would in fact be a prequel to The Batman.

While the series is currently known as Gotham P.D. this is not set in stone. A recent rumor claimed that the working title for the series will be Arkham, suggesting that the madness of the infamous asylum will be unleashed on the small screen and sit at the center of the show. This would also likely mean that the HBO Max series will feature a lot of familiar faces from Batman’s rogue’s gallery, with the likes of James Gordon struggling to tackle the onslaught of supervillains. Further details from the report claim that the series will be told from the “perspective of a corrupt Gotham police officer.”

Following a series of delays, The Batman is scheduled for release on March 4, 2022. Introducing The Dark Knight during his second year of fighting crime, Batman is soon faced with his greatest threat, The Riddler, a serial killer who is targeting elite Gotham City citizens. Batman slowly uncovers corruption that connects to his own family during the investigation and is forced to make new allies to catch the Riddler and bring the corrupt to justice.
