A second deleted scene from The Batman puts the focus on Colin Farrell’s early version of the infamous gangster, The Penguin. Building more on Selina Kyle’s relationship with the soon-to-be crime boss, the scene also gives us further insight into Oswald Cobblepot aspirations, with the villain saying, “I know you don’t see it yet, honey, but Falcone ain’t gonna be around forever. One day this city is going to be mine.” A line that lends itself well to director Matt Reeves recent Scarface comparison.

Released via social media, this deleted scene is expected to be one of several featured on The Batman home release. The first deleted scene to be released from the DC movie gave us our best look so far at Eternals star Barry Keoghan as The Joker, with fans looking forward to seeing these early versions of both The Clown Prince of Crime and The Penguin evolve into the supervillains we know and love.

The Penguin in particular will be given a great opportunity to achieve his dreams of criminal rule, with the character being given his own spinoff series on HBO Max. The idea behind the show reportedly began as The Batman 2, before Matt Reeves was instead convinced of exploring The Penguin in more detail on the small screen. According to reports, Reeves “mentioned offhand to some studio executives that he thought a second “Batman” movie could focus on how Oz became a crime kingpin,” but rather than use this as the foundation of The Batman sequel, the studio felt that the rise of The Penguin would be better suited to a television series. “And they were like, ‘Oh, we want to do that as a show,’” Reeves said.

The Penguin limited series will be executive produced by Matt Reeves, with Lauren LeFranc serving as showrunner. It is just one of several spinoffs of The Batman being planned, with another series set to explore Arkham Asylum, and perhaps even featuring more from The Joker.

The Batman Will Be Released on Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray & DVD in May

     Warner Bros. Pictures

The Batman introduces audiences to a version of The Dark Knight (Robert Pattinson) just two years of stalking the streets and striking fear into the hearts of criminals. With only a few trusted allies, including Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis) and Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright), amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman was released for digital download, as well as to stream on HBO Max, on April 18, 2022. The Batman is due to premiere on HBO on April 23, and will then be released on Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD on May 24.
