The Batman fans could be waiting a while, even forever, for a sequel. According to a report by Variety about the state of the DC Cinematic Universe, The Batman writer and director Matt Reeves is still “on track” for The Batman 2, which would see Robert Pattinson reprise the role of The Dark Knight. But, “the project remains in development” and has not even been given the greenlight, with the report concluding that “any future film is years away” — which is certainly not what fans of The Batman wanted to hear.

The Batman 2 was announced at CinemaCon in April 2022, with both Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson set to return, but it sounds like the sequel may not be quite such a done deal. News that will make DC fans nervous following the recent shake-up at Warner Bros.

Released back in March to rave reviews and box office success, The Batman introduces audiences to an early version of the character just two years into his crime-fighting career. Stalking the streets as Batman and striking fear into the hearts of criminals has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. But when a killer named The Riddler begins targeting Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues will send the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld.

As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

Directed by Matt Reeves, who wrote the screenplay with Peter Craig, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne AKA Batman alongside Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle ALA Catwoman, Paul Dano as Paul Edward Nashton AKA Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot AKA The Penguin.

Robert Pattinson Has Revealed Who He Hopes to Do Battle with in The Batman 2

With The Batman 2 seemingly so far from release, it should come as little surprise to learn that no details have yet been revealed regarding the direction of the sequel. Star Robert Pattinson, though, has some ideas in mind, with the actor recently revealing that he would like his Dark Knight to do battle with The Court of Owls.

At the time, not only did Pattinson reveal his hopes of facing off with the Court of Owls, he even stated that the villains will “probably” be in The Batman 2. Created by writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo for DC Comics, The Court of Owls is an organized crime group and secret society of wealthy Gothamites. Going back centuries, The Court of Owls has manipulated the citizens of Gotham for their own gain, with their dark history and evil plans slowly uncovered by Batman. All elements that would fit perfectly into the world of The Batman.
