Netflix has unveiled a trailer for another one of its original content, titled The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself. Based on the Half Bad trilogy by Sally Green, it’s described as an “edgy, YA drama that’s grounded in the modern day,” except in a world where witches live among us. The trailer makes the distinction between the two types of witches—the Blood Witches and the Fairborn Witches.

The show follows 16-year-old Nathan (Jay Lycurgo), the illegitimate son of the “devil himself," the world’s most dangerous witch. While he has a sister who seems to hate him, most of Nathan’s problems stem from having an “evil dad.” He’s spent his whole life closely monitored for fear he’ll turn out like his father, who he’s also destined to kill by and by.

“Fight one of the most powerful witches that’s ever lived? That’s just about the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.” Those words come from the mischievous Annalise (Nadia Parkes, Domina, StarStruck), who’s a witch too. Though heavily censored, the trailer depicts her making another man burst apart with her powers. Nathan responds by saying that training was going quite well, actually.

More On What You Can Expect From the Series

Hunted by the Fairborns, Nathan goes on the run alongside Annalise and the charismatic Gabriel (Emilien Vekemans), who at one point can be seen saying, “Let’s just go into this with a positive mental attitude, shall we?” Only time will tell if they succeed on that front, though the trailer certainly doesn’t make it seem like they will.

Nathan is shown to develop a close relationship with his two companions. He and Gabriel are shown staring longingly at one another, and when Nathan wonders if his life is even worse saving, Gabriel says it is to him. Another point in the trailer also shows Nathan and Annalise making out. In addition, the three of them are shown sleeping in the same bed together, though it’s not clear if that’s post-coital or simply due to a lack of options.

The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself was written by Joe Barton (The Lazarus Project, Giri/Haji). Directors on the series include Colm McCarthy (Black Mirror: Black Museum, The Girl with all the Gifts), Rachna Suri (Mr. Whippy, Our Lad), and Debs Paterson (Willow, Domina). An executive producer on the project is Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings, King Kong, Planet of the Apes).

Additional cast members include Kerry Fox (Conversations with Friends, Last Tango in Halifax), Liz White (Unforgotten, Brexit: The Uncivil War), Karen Connell (Vikings), Fehinti Balogun (I May Destroy You, Dune), and Misha Butler (Kiss Me First). Roísín Murphy, multiple Brit Award and Mercury Music Prize nominee, will also be making an appearance on the show that’s due to arrive on October 28. Just in time for Halloween.
