The 80th edition of the annual Golden Globes returned to primetime on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, hosted by the newly minted Emmy winner Jerrod Carmichael at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. Searchlight Picture’s dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin, from writer-director Martin McDonagh and starring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon, won Golden Globes for Best Screenplay and Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Farrell was also awarded with the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical.

The HFPA has awarded the Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy annually since 1952. To be eligible, a film’s runtime must be at least 70 minutes, the principal dialogue must be in English, be commercially available for seven days or more in the greater Los Angeles area, and screened to the HFPA members and voting pool. This year’s nominees were Babylon, The Banshees of Inisherin, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and Triangle of Sadness.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

In 2021, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization responsible for the Golden Globes, was exposed for not having a single black voter out of its 87 members. After a horde of stars and fans denounced the award show for its practices, NBC decided to cancel the 2022 broadcast and give the Golden Globes an ethics makeover. Not too long afterward, the HFPA added 103 new voters, including non-members and Black members, in an effort to increase diversity and improve on the breadth of films recognized by the Golden Globes. With the HFPA’s steps toward change, it will be interesting to see if Hollywood feels like 2023’s winning films and creatives reflect a fairer voting process, or if the winning projects are still helmed by people who are predominantly white, male, and straight.

Colin Farrell Wins Golden Globe for The Banshees of Inisherin

The Banshees of Inisherin received the most nominations of any film at the Golden Globes this year, with a total of eight nominations. Then, when Colin Farrell won his second Best Actor Golden Globe on Tuesday night, it meant that the film also walked away with the leading three trophies of the night.

Blonde actress Ana de Armas presented Farrell with the award for best actor. Cutting into his limited time to give a “Thank You” speech, the Banshees actor instead complimented de Armas’ performance as Marilyn Monroe.

“Ana, I thought you were extraordinary. I cried myself to sleep,” Farrell told de Armas of watching Blonde.
