The recently-announced Golden Globe nominations have created a lot of buzz, and leading the nominations is The Banshees of Inisherin, an unusual drama-comedy written and directed by Martin McDonagh. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has been nominated for eight Golden Globe Awards: best musical or comedy, best actor in a musical or comedy, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best director, best screenplay, and best score. Both Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan received the nomination for best supporting actor, so the film can at most receive seven Golden Globe Awards, although two actors from the same movie being nominated for the same award is quite impressive.

Following closely behind with six nominations is Everything Everywhere All at Once, and in third place for most nominations is Babylon. Of course, nominations are just nominations, and it remains to be seen if the aforementioned films win any Golden Globes. The ceremony will air on January 10th, 2023 at 7 P.M., CST.
The Banshees of Inisherin stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two lifelong friends living on a rural island called Inisherin, just off the coast of Ireland. When Gleeson’s character Colm abruptly ends their friendship for seemingly no reason, Farrell’s character Padraic sets off to find out why. This isn’t the first time the iconic Irish actors starred in a film together. They appeared in 2008’s In Bruges, which was also written and directed by Martin McDonagh. It’s another dark comedy with a strange and unpredictable story, with Farrell and Gleeson playing as two hitmen lying low in the Belgian city Bruges after a job gone wrong. Farrell won a Golden Globe for his work in the film, and he might just land another one come January.
The director’s last film, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri won him a Golden Globe Award for writing the screenplay, and another Golden Globe for best drama. The leads, Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell, both earned a plethora of awards for their performances.
The Banshees of Inisherin has already received rave reviews, with a near-perfect score from Rotten Tomatoes, and a thirteen-minute-long standing ovation when it first premiered at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year. It received a wide release on October 21st, 2022, and is still screening in some theaters, although it has yet to land on a streaming service.
