It’s the end of the line for The Baby-Sitters Club. Per Variety, the series has just been canceled at Netflix after a two-season run with no plans to develop a third season. The news was confirmed by creator and showrunner Rachel Shukert who admits to feeling heartbroken but remains grateful for the experience.

“I have wanted to be a part of the world Ann M. Martin created since I was seven years old, and for two amazing seasons I actually got to be,” Shukert said. “It was a dream come true. Although I am heartbroken not to be returning to Stoneybrook for 20 more seasons, I am so proud of the incredible show our amazing cast and crew created and the way it brought joy and comfort to so many when they needed it most. Thank you to Walden Media and to Netflix for giving us the opportunity to introduce Kristy, Claudia, Stacey, Mary Anne, Dawn, Jessi and Mallory to a new generation of fans who I know will love them as much as we do for years to come.”

Based on Ann M. Martin’s book series, The Baby-Sitter Club follows seven friend as they start their own babysitting business. As demand for their club continues to grow, founders Kristy Thomas (Sophie Grace), Mary-Anne Spier (Malia Baker), Claudia Kishi (Momona Tamada), Stacey McGill (Shay Rudolph), and Dawn Schafer (Kyndra Sanchez) have now welcomed Mallory Pike (Vivian Watson) and Jessi Ramsey (Anais Lee) to their ranks. With the new school year comes booming business, new relationships, personal journeys and important lessons, but through it all the club is there for each other every step of the way.

Alicia Silverstone, Mark Feuerstein, and Marc Evan Jackson also starred. The show was executive produced by Rachel Shukert alongside Lucia Aniello, Michael De Luca, Lucy Kitada, Sascha Rothchild, Walden Media’s Naia Cucukov, Ben Forrer and Frank Smith, and Martin.

The Baby-Sitters Club Was Highly Acclaimed

It seems likely that The Baby-Sitters Club was axed due to low viewership as it clearly had nothing to do with its reception. Both seasons of the series scored perfect 100% ratings at Rotten Tomatoes, an impressive feat for any show. It all comes down to the bottom line, however, and perhaps the viewership numbers just weren’t high enough for the streamer to justify investing in another season. Netflix does not publicly release their streaming numbers.

Previously, HBO adapted The Baby-Sitters Club as a serie that premiered on the cabler in 1990. A more well-known film adaptation was released in 1995 by director Melanie Mayron and writer Dalene Young. That movie featured a cast including Schuyler Fisk, Rachael Leigh Cook, Larisa Oleynik, Tricia Joe, Bre Blair, and Stacey Linn Ramower. It didn’t light the box office on fire but developed a cult following with it release on home video.

You can watch both seasons of The Baby-Sitters Club on Netflix, even if the series might feel like it’s ended two soon by the time you get to that season 2 finale.
