Perhaps the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the second chapter of a three-part story that will take 100 years to tell. Last month, the film debuted on the streaming service, resurrecting Leatherface at a time when other popular slasher film franchises are getting revivals. It was one of the most-watched offerings on Netflix soon after launch, but as of now, the future of the franchise remains unclear with no immediate plans to make a follow-up film.

The new film takes a page from 2018’s Halloween by only acknowledging the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie released in 1974, tossing all sequels from the continuity. This allowed for original final girl, Sally Hardesty, to return for a rematch with Leatherface, though she was this time played by Olwen Fouéré rather than the late Marilyn Burns. Bringing back original characters in older films to appear in new movies has become very popular in Hollywood in recent years.

It’s impossible to predict what the industry will look like in 50 years, but around that time, Elsie Fisher just might be coming back for another Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. Speaking with Looper about the Netflix film, Fisher offered her pitch for another legacy sequel which would see Leatherface tracking down her character decades later after she’s long moved on with her life. We’d have to ignore that Leatherface would now be at least 120 years old, or just accept that he’s become supernatural, but in any case, it’s certainly an interesting idea.

“I always say that I want to leave the franchise alone for like 50 years and then come back and have this movie come out, and it’s Lila, and she’s really old, and she’s picking up all these hobbies. She’s been in therapy, and has a family, and it’s this super beautiful groundbreaking dramedy film. It’s amazing, and then 60 minutes in, Leatherface comes in … and kills everyone.”

Will Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) Get a Sequel?

The new movie was met with mixed reviews, though that’s certainly not unusual for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, or really any major horror movie series. There isn’t another movie officially in the works at this time, though it does seem inevitable that Leatherface will be back on the screen once again. It just remains to be seen if the next film will expand further upon the 2022 reboot’s story, as teased in the post-credit scene, or if it will reboot the series once again.

David Blue Garcia directed Texas Chainsaw Massacre using a screenplay by Chris Thomas Devlin with its story by Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues. It stars Sarah Yarkin, Elsie Fisher, Mark Burnham, Moe Dunford, Nell Hudson, Jessica Allain, Olwen Fouéré, Jacob Latimore, and Alice Krige. The film picks up nearly 50 years after Leatherface’s killing spree in 1973 which left only one survivor, Sally Hardesty, who’s devoted her life to trying to track down the man who killed her brother and friends.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre can be found streaming on Netflix.
