Some of the zaniest opponent matchups in cinema have been products of characters crossovers. This includes films like Freddy vs. Jason, where two horror icons get combative; or Alien vs. Predator, which has the famed extraterrestrial hunters making one another their prey. The big screen has even pitted heroes against one another before, like audiences saw with Batman V. Superman in 2016.

Across the many brutish and skilled fighters in the action genre, there are some who seem made to fight one-another, prepared to team up, or destined to rematch. Some of these meetings have even been conceptualized then canceled, like the outrageous but canned Men in Black and 21 Jump Street crossover, which would have shown both groups working together. Unlikely or entirely possible, here are some crossovers that could yield explosive opponent matchups.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

RoboCop vs. The Terminator

     Orion Pictures / Paramount Pictures

Although the RoboCop and the Terminator duke it out in RoboCop Versus The Terminator — a classic Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis title from 1993 — the two never traded blows in a feature film. Since they are both, essentially, walking arsenals created to locate and eliminate targets, RoboCop and The Terminator have received many comparisons in the time since their debuts. So many so that some even consider if RoboCop is a copycat of the seminal Arnold Schwarzenegger role.

Both characters were icons of the ’80s and action flicks, and each still appears in various media today. Considering their long-running popularity and similarities, it’s almost surprising these two never fought on-screen. At the least, video game fans can make the matchup a reality thanks to Mortal Kombat 11’s inclusion of both characters.

The Punisher vs. Judge Dredd

Netflix Streaming Services / Entertainment Film Distributors

The Punisher and Judge Dredd are similar in their fighting styles and their individual stances on criminology, which range from personal to often skewed positions. While the two stand on near opposite ends regarding judicial beliefs, they each view themselves as on-site judges. In Dredd’s instance, he has been appointed as a judicial officer, entrusted with the power of arresting, convicting, sentencing, and executing criminals. Dredd’s final judgments are chosen by the conclusions he draws in a given case, while The Punisher instead employs all-out warfare against criminals indiscriminately.

Both comic book characters, The Punisher’s origins as a killer are a step darker than Dredd’s, whose origins are based in satire. An unwell man seeking vengeance for his family’s murder, the Punisher seeks to eradicate the mob who took his loved ones, and he doesn’t stop there. His unrelenting anger would alarm an intervening Dredd, who prefers to do things by the book within his dystopia. In the case of their meeting, it would be unlikely Dredd lets Punisher off with just a warning.

Zorro vs. Jack Sparrow

Sony Pictures Releasing / Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Two skilled sword fighters, Captain Jack Sparrow of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, may have a hard time surviving the legendary Zorro if encountered. With Zorro’s quick movements and ability to evade and escape, Sparrow’s battle may end in him retreating to the seas where he remains captain. Furthermore, since Zorro has before done crossovers with modern characters like Djanjo, it is not impossible that he faces off against Sparrow.

With Sparrow being a thief, Zorro would naturally take issue with the pirate, since his own moral code is one that prioritizes the protection of commoners. Zorro’s intents to keep commoners from being taken advantage of may cause the vigilante to consider Sparrow a villain, ensuring a battle that could be detrimental for an unsuspecting Sparrow. Where the two may best match one another in skill is with their dueling. With Sparrow surviving many challenging duels himself, Zorro may find the captain an admirable opponent, but the vigilante’s focused training would not go wasted.

Beatrix Kiddo vs. Nikki Bell

     Miramax Films

Beatrix Kiddo vs. Nikki Bell is perhaps the most likely matchup on this list. Since the original two-part saga was released, a long-awaited third volume of Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill series has been up in the air. It has long been speculated that a Kill Bill: Vol. III would follow antihero Beatrix Kiddo as she faces Nikki Bell, the daughter of a former partner whom she murdered. The fated battle is alluded to in the first Kill Bill film, but the third installment never happened.

While Tarantino has voiced interest in making Kill Bill: Vol. III, the director is planning to retire from filmmaking with his next and tenth film. This has led some fans to wonder if the sequel will become his final outing, or if the saga will return under another director’s oversight.

John Wick vs. Jason Bourne

     Lionsgate / Universal Pictures

John Wick and Jason Bourne are two of the most feared assassins to hit the screen in the 21st century. While audiences have not seen Bourne since his 2016 return in Jason Bourne, Wick’s saga will continue next year with a fourth film, an addition to the already beloved action franchise. It’s unlikely that Wick’s story will develop to include a confrontation with Jason Bourne, but a feature-length film following the two in battle could be electric.

Wick and Bourne make good opponents for their similar skill sets. Both trained assassins, and seen as the most lethal in their universes, neither of the gunmen would go out quietly if the other were to attack. Both durable, Wick has experience fighting other hitmen, but Bourne has proved hard to get rid of himself.

The Predator vs. John Rambo

20th Century Fox / Orion Pictures

John Rambo is a one-man army capable of hunting foes with the best. The Predator, on the other hand, is not much different. Rambo’s tendencies to disobey orders, take things into his own hands, and react with violence could easily result in a meeting with The Predator, but his ability to escape the extraterrestrial huntsman is more unclear. Both utilize weaponry from a distance and employ tactical warfare, so their battle could be a lengthy one.

While The Predator has been bested by humans before in the character’s franchise, many were not as tough nor courageous as Rambo, but this does not mean he would take a victory without bruises. Their bloody encounter would potentially produce one of the most heart-pulsing opponent matchups cinema could offer.
