Warning: This article contains spoilers for season 1 of Tell Me Lies
Hulu’s Tell Me Lies aired its season 1 finale last month, and there was no shortage of entertaining drama. Stephen (Jackson White) dropped a bombshell on viewers when it was revealed he’s somehow engaged to Lucy’s (Grace Van Patten) high school best friend, Lydia (Natalee Linez).
Evan (Branden Cook) managed to disappoint viewers when he ended up naked in Lucy’s bed after comforting her following yet another debacle with Stephen. Why did he leave that party hand-in-hand with Diana (Alicia Crowder) when he arrived with Lucy? Oh, that’s right, he’s terrible. Also, in yet another not-so-surprising revelation, it was Stephen who was driving Macy’s (Lily McInerny) car the night she died. It explains a lot, given he’s been trying to quell any discussion of Macy’s death since Drew (Benjamin Wadsworth) disclosed he was driving that same night and swerved to miss Macy’s car before running away from the crash scene. Needless to say, the finale was full of jaw-dropping moments.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Despite its fairly high critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, an impressive 86%, and generally favorable audience rating, a moderate 61%, there has been no official announcement from Hulu regarding another season of the show. Nonetheless, if a season 2 does happen, there are quite a few questions viewers surely hope to see answered during the show’s sophomore season.
However, even if there is a season 2 on the horizon, viewers shouldn’t expect it on the small screen until late 2023, if not 2024. For the time being, viewers will just have to ponder the finale.
How Did Stephen and Lydia Become Engaged?
Hulu
Viewers were aware of Lucy’s best friend, Lydia, early in the series. Her appearance throughout the show, however, was sparse. She doesn’t attend the same school as Lucy, and the only time Lucy visited her hometown was during the winter break. It would be understandable if some viewers were even left wondering who Lydia was in the first place when she was introduced as Stephen’s fiance.
As far as viewers were concerned, Stephen and Lydia have never crossed paths. What happens in the time after Lucy’s freshman year to four years post-graduation that leads to a coupling of Lucy’s toxic ex and best friend? Surely Lydia knew about everything Stephen made Lucy endure during their relationship, so how did she manage to become entangled with him? Such a question is probably the biggest one season 2 will need to answer.
Does Bree Find Out About Evan and Lucy?
Much to the viewers’ disappointment, Evan ended the season in Lucy’s bed. What seemed to have been the only perfect couple in Tell Me Lies had everything to do with Bree (Catherine Missal) rather than Evan. It turns out all the men in the series are the same. They seek the nearest bed of any woman who pays attention to them.
However, it should be noted that unlike every other hookup scene on the show, viewers don’t actually see what happened. The audience only sees Evan asleep in Lucy’s bed. While Lucy clearly indicates she’s made some sort of mistake, viewers could have misinterpreted her expression, so maybe there’s still a possibility that nothing occurred between the two.
Although, given that Evan clearly had feelings for Lucy at one point before Bree, and Lucy was feeling down about Stephen, it’s completely plausible the two would make such a dire mistake. However, Bree and Evan look more than happy at their wedding, which would indicate that either Bree remains in the dark about Evan’s transgression with Lucy, she knows about what happened and forgave them, or nothing actually occurred between the two.
What Happens to Drew?
At the beginning of season 1, viewers are given a small clue as to what happened to Drew. As Wrigley wreaks mild havoc while attending Bree and Evan’s wedding, Evan reminds everyone to go easy on him because his brother’s birthday was the day prior. Given that Drew doesn’t attend the wedding, coupled with everyone’s general demeanor regarding Drew’s absence, it’s assumed he took his own life. However, nothing regarding his exact whereabouts is discussed.
As the first season progressed, viewers watched Drew crumble further into a depressive state due to what he believed was his role in Macy’s death. However, in the final episode, audiences discover that while Drew swerved to avoid hitting Macy’s car before fleeing the scene, it wasn’t his fault. In fact, Stephen was driving Macy’s car while drunk and staged the accident to make it look like Macy had been driving before he fled the scene himself.
Does Anyone Find Out About Stephen’s Role in Macy’s Death?
While the show is predicated on its main characters continuously lying to one another, the truth manages to come out one way or another in the end. At some point throughout season 2, it’s highly likely that someone will discover something about Stephen’s role in Macy’s death. However, given that Stephen was invited to Bree and Evan’s wedding, it’s unlikely that anyone in attendance knows anything about it.
Maybe Drew is the one who discovers the truth, and Stephen steps in somehow to prevent his secret from getting out. It’s possible that Drew’s absence in the present time is connected in some way to possible events in the past with Stephen. Only season 2 will tell, and until the show’s renewal is announced by Hulu, fans will have to remain in the dark.
