Disney+ has given Marvel Studios a platform to introduce new heroes into the MCU through multi-episode series instead of feature films. Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel have offered deep dives into what makes characters like Marc Spector and Kamala Khan tick, and next month’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law will do the same for Jennifer Walters. The cousin of Bruce Banner undergoes a life-changing transformation from ordinary lawyer into the powerhouse known as She-Hulk, an adjustment which she doesn’t seem to be too thrilled about. Jennifer Walters herself Tatiana Maslany recently spoke to Empire about how her character’s reluctance to be She-Hulk sets her apart from her MCU counterparts:

In the first trailer for She-Hulk, it was pretty clear that Jennifer doesn’t enjoy the attention that comes with practicing law as a six-foot-tall person with green skin. What makes her job even more complicated is the transition from taking the cases of normal human beings to defending people who have powers. Maslany says that added dynamic is also what helps She-Hulk break new ground for Marvel on Disney+:

“She really is the antithesis of most superhero narratives. There’s this great element of denial in her that’s relatable. For me, it was rejecting what’s happened for as long as I could, as that’s what causes the fun tension between Jennifer and She-Hulk.”

“She’s in a career that’s male-dominated and incredibly vicious and hierarchal. When she’s heading this superhuman firm, that’s where we get some really fun characters that she’s either defending or in opposition of. It’s like this really absurd take on a legal show.”

Many of the Plot Details of She-Hulk Remain Unclear

She-Hulk is set to premiere on Disney+ in a little more than a month, and not many details are actually known about the series. There’s still only been one full trailer that’s been released, which offers little insight on what the actual plot of the series will be. The trailer provides some character details for Jennifer and shows some of the interactions she has with her cousin Bruce, but it’s still unclear how exactly she gains the ability to turn into She-Hulk. In the comics, a blood transfusion between the Banner family members is what does the trick, which could end up being the case in the show. Still, Marvel doesn’t exactly adapt its characters one-to-one from the comics, so there could be some changes in store for She-Hulk’s origin.

The series is also expected to feature unexpected cameos while Jennifer is practicing in the new superhuman division of the law firm she works for. Rumors have circulated about different characters who could be appearing in She-Hulk, but Marvel is keeping details under wraps until those specific episodes air. Fortunately, audiences won’t have to wait too much longer as She-Hulk is set to premiere on Disney+ on August 17. At least one more trailer should be released before then, which should hopefully provide a little more clarity on what to expect with the next iteration of the Hulk mythology in the MCU.
