Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been full of introductions, as audiences have seen characters such as Shang-Chi, The Eternals, Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, and surprisingly, Man-Thing, make their way into the MCU. Now, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will continue the trend as fans finally get to see the live-action interpretation of Namor the Sub-Mariner.
The character is one of the oldest comic book heroes in the Marvel catalog, making his first appearance all the way back in 1939. Namor’s introduction is long overdue, but fans don’t need to wait much longer to see Tenoch Huerta’s portrayal of the character. Namor was the subject of the latest featurette released from Marvel Entertainment, which included a look at the underwater kingdom of Talocan. “Introducing Namor was really an opportunity to introduce another sovereign ruler of a group of people,” director Ryan Coogler explains in the video. “He shows up representing Talocan.”

Letitia Wright, who plays Shuri in the MCU, hints toward the eventual showdown between the nation of Wakanda and Talocan. “I cannot wait for everyone to see Talocan,” Wright says. “I’m excited about how we’re gonna see the world come alive. Both nations want the same thing, which is to preserve and protect their people. But they’re willing to go about it different ways.”
Fans can see how the relationship between Huerta’s Namor and the Wakandan people unfolds when Black Panther: Wakanda Forever arrives exclusively in theaters later this month, premiering on Nov. 11.
Tenoch Huerta Says He’s Proud of His Character

Namor and his backstory are undergoing a slight change in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Originally, Namor was from the underwater Kingdom of Atlantis, however, that won’t be the case in the upcoming film. Likely due to DC and Aquaman’s connection to Atlantis, Marvel opted to go a different route, connecting the character to Mesoamerican culture and Tlālōcān, a paradise in Aztec mythology.
Huerta, who is from Ecatepec de Morelos, Mexico, appreciates the change in backstory and says he’s proud to represent Namor on the big screen.
Given his character’s importance in the comics, Namor could undoubtedly be a big part of the MCU going forward. However, fans will know more on Nov. 11 when Black Panther: Wakanda Forever arrives in theaters.
“Namor loves his people, and he’s gonna protect them because to be a ruler you have to serve the people. Talocan has a big meaning for me, it’s part of my personal heritage as a Mexican, as an inhabitant of Mesoamerica. Finally, I could find a more powerful representation of my culture with dignity and respect.”
