We can now confirm that Taissa Farmiga will return for The Nun 2, thanks to Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter. While Farmiga was certainly open to returning to the franchise and the official synopsis for the film said that her character in the first Nun film, Sister Irene, would be returning, it was previously unclear if her actress would be coming back as well.

While announcing the news over Instagram and Twitter, Farmiga captioned the post “Sister acts II.” Besides being a pun on how she’s playing a nun again, it could also be referring to how Farmiga’s real-life sister Vera Farmiga plays Lorrain Warren in the main Conjuring series. However, plans to have the two of them act in the same movie together within the series, similar to Higher Ground, have yet to materialize.

The Nun concerned Valak (Bonnie Aarons), a demon who had taken the form of a spooky nun previously introduced in The Conjuring 2, haunting a monastery. Sister Irene was sent to investigate the phenomenon alongside Father Burke (Demián Bichir). It was a prequel film set many years before the haunting of the Perron family depicted in the original Conjuring.

Besides this, Farmiga is currently shooting season two of Julian Fellowes’ HBO series The Gilded Age with Cynthia Nixon and Carrie Coon. Another upcoming project of hers will be She Taught Love alongside Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Darrell Britt-Gibson. Farmiga was also recently seen in Pascual Sisto’s John and the Hole alongside Michael C. Hall.

The Nun 2 will take place in 1956, which is set a few years after its predecessor. After a priest is murdered, Sister Irene will once again come face to face with Valak. She will join in this endeavor by Euphoria actor Storm Reid, who’s been cast in the main role. While Reid’s character details are being kept under wraps, an early casting call for the sequel might provide a few clues. Of course, plans could have changed between then and now.

Michael Chaves, the director of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, will also direct The Nun 2. Akela Cooper wrote the screenplay, though revisions by Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing have been done. Atomic Monster’s James Wan and The Safran Company’s Peter Safran, who has produced all eight of The Conjuring franchise films, will also produce this one. Michael Clear and Gary Dauberman will serve as executive producers.
