Paramount+ has a hit on its hands with Tulsa King, and after pulling in high viewership, the series has been officially renewed. Per THR, Tulsa King will return for a second season, and the announcement comes after the series reached very high numbers following a special preview on Paramount Network that aired after the hit show Yellowstone. According to Nielsen, Tulsa King even managed to surpass House of the Dragon as cable’s most-watched series premiere of 2022 with 3.7 million viewers.

Addressing this success and the renewal, Paramount Media Networks and MTV Entertainment Studios President and CEO Chris McCarthy said, “Tulsa King scored as the number one new series of the year, topping all others including the Game of Thrones sequel House of the Dragon. With its preview on Paramount Network, and on Paramount+, it shattered records, driving us to our biggest new sign-up day in history — which is why we instantly greenlit season 2.”

“With the combination of the incomparable Sylvester Stallone and Taylor Sheridan’s darkly comedic twist on the beloved mobster genre, we have found our latest hit in Tulsa King,” adds Tanya Giles, chief programming officer for Paramount Streaming. “The series’ premiere on Paramount+ helped drive a record sign-up day fueled by our unique ability as Paramount Global to tap into Paramount Network’s incredible Yellowstone audience.”

Of course, having Yellowstone lead into the Paramount Network preview was incredibly helpful for Tulsa King. After all, Yellowstone is pulling in around 17 million viewers. Still a popular movie star, Stallone’s involvement must also be bringing in fans to check out Tulsa King, and for the most part, people seem to be enjoying it. Its score on the Tomatometer at Rotten Tomatoes is 78%, though its audience score sits at 87%.

Recently, Stallone spoke about the future of Tulsa King in a Collider interview. As we’ve seen from Stallone starring in many sequels in multiple franchises, we know him as an actor who loves keeping a good story going. With that in mind, he expects to feel the same way about Tulsa King, going so far as to envision many more seasons for the series. And he made these comments before the season 2 renewal.

“I’m a big believer, since I started my career, in sequels. I think that if you build a character, why have them disappear?” Stallone said.

Tulsa King stars Stallone as Dwight “The General” Manfredi, a New York gangster who’s sent to Tulsa upon his release from prison where he’s tasked with building a criminal empire in the Oklahoma city. Created by Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone), the series also stars Max Casella, Domenick Lombardozzi, Vincent Piazza, Jay Will, and A.C. Peterson. You can watch a trailer for season 1 below.

You can stream the first season of Tulsa King on Paramount+ with new episodes debuting on Sunday nights. Season 2 doesn’t yet have a premiere date.
