Melissa Benoist, best known for her role as Supergirl, Superman’s biological cousin, is apparently near a deal to star in the upcoming HBO Max political comedy The Girls on the Bus. If on board, this will be her second project with Greg Berlanti, the Executive Producer of the upcoming HBO Max show who was also the EP of Supergirl. Benoist was a part of the DC comics-inspired TV series in the titular role throughout its six-season run on CW.

The Girls on the Bus received a straight-to-series order at HBO Max after previously having been set up at The CW and Netflix. The show will be a political comedy based on the book Chasing Hillary, by The New York Times correspondent Amy Chozick. The book is basically about the two presidential campaigns by Hillary Clinton.

Although representatives for HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television declined to comment on news of Benoist being in talks for the series, the role she is apparently supposed to play is of one of the four female journalists who have been tasked with documenting every move of a group of deeply flawed politicians who are all running for higher office. These reporters are to chronicle the campaigns while finding friendship, love, and scandal along the way. While the book is about real incidents, the show and the character that Benoist would play, as well as the politicians and the other reporters, will all be fictionalized.

The show, being described as a “character-driven comedy”, will be executive produced by Julie Plec and Greg Berlanti, along with his Berlanti Productions partner Sarah Schechter and head of TV David Madden. Plec and author Chozick are credited as writers on the series as well as executive producers.

Melissa Benoist Will Be Reprising Her Role as a Reporter in The Girls on the Bus

Benoist’s previous appearance as a reporter was as Kara Danvers, the alter ego of Kara Zor-El, or Supergirl. Her portrayal of Superman’s female counterpart in the CW show has, by now, achieved iconic status. She has also made guest appearances in the crossover episodes of the other DC comics-inspired shows as well, which have now been branded as a single fictional universe known as the Arrowverse. The CW’s beloved Girl of Steel was first featured in a cameo in The Flash TV series, followed by Arrow, Batwoman, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, as a part of the annual crossover events.

However, with her hanging up the cape, she will not be able to reprise her role in the DCEU. The Extended Universe has currently cast Sasha Calle, set to first appear in the upcoming DCEU film, The Flash, alongside Ezra Miller.
