The 2023 Sundance Film Festival, which took place in Park City, Utah, in person for the first time since 2020, has announced the winners in the Grand Jury and other categories. Many films and documentaries received positive reviews at the festival, which attracted significant attention from the media and audience, as well as the studios, and some of them have already become popular. For example, Netflix spent at least $20 million and bought the finance-industry psychodrama Chloe Domont’s Fair Play, which returned from the festival with only a nomination, the horror movie Run Rabbit Run starring Sarah Snook, and the adventure documentary Deepest Breath. Another giant, Apple, bought the American-Irish musical comedy-drama Flora and Sun for a similar amount. The official list of winners from the festival was recently released, courtesy of Sundance.
A.V. Rockwell’s mother-son drama A Thousand and One and British comedy-drama Scrapper, directed by Charlotte Regan, has won the Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic, which is the most prestigious category of the festival. The documentary Grand Jury Prize goes to Joe Brewster & Michèle Stephenson’s Going To Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project, a documentary that recounts the story of acclaimed poet, and Maite Alberdi’s The Eternal Memory.
Marija Kavtaradze (Slow), Sing J. Lee (The Accidental Getaway Driver), and Luke Lorentzen (A Still Small Voice) received prizes in the Directing Award category. In addition, Filipino American filmmaker Kayla Abuda Galang’s When You Left Me on That Boulevard won the Best Short Film award in the Grand Jury Prize.
The Festival Favorite Award was given to director Christopher Zalla’s Radical, which tells the true story of a teacher at the dangerous Mexican border. Acclaimed Jonathan Majors’ Magazine Dreams, directed by Elijah Bynum, wins the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Creative Vision.
