Warning: This article contains spoilers for previous seasons of Succession
HBOMax recently dropped a very brief teaser for the fourth season of Succession, and fans couldn’t be more excited for the Roy Family drama to continue. There’s no official release date for the upcoming season, but the trailer indicates its release will be sometime in Spring 2023.
The show first premiered in 2018 and follows the Roy Family as they navigate the dynamic power struggles within their multi-billion-dollar global media conglomerate, Waystar RoyCo. Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook), and Roman (Kieran Culkin) are three of the four children of the family’s patriarch, Logan Roy (Brian Cox). They all figuratively tussle with one another throughout the series for the top spot in the company. Logan’s oldest son, Connor (Alan Ruck), never seems to make a viable play for the crown, instead opting to follow a hollow political career while watching his siblings battle one another from the sidelines.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Viewers last saw the Roy siblings licking their proverbial wounds at the end of season 3 after a bombshell was revealed during their failed attempt to utilize their majority share votes and prevent Logan from selling the company. However, despite putting aside their squabbles and uniting in a last-ditch effort to maintain control, Kendall, Shiv, and Roman discover that Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen), Shiv’s husband, sold them out to Logan in the final moments of the season and informed him of his children’s plan. As a result, Logan was able to stay one step ahead of his kids before they attempted to pull the rug out from under him.
As the release of season 4 approaches, the new teaser trailer for Succession offers a lot for fans to ponder before its premiere next year.
Logan Roy Isn’t Going Away Anytime Soon
HBO
The extremely short teaser trailer for Succession opens with Logan Roy proclaiming grandiose statements to someone off-screen unknown to the viewer. “Everything I try to do, people turn against me,” he says as he appears to play the victim in a situation he made more contentious with his children. Contrary to their wishes, Logan is dead set on selling Waystar RoyCo to the highest bidder. Despite their feeble attempts to appeal to his humanity as their father, which Logan perceives as a weakness, he managed to sidestep his children by regaining their majority share votes.
As the trailer continues, Logan explains, “I’m a hundred feet tall. These people are pygmies.” Surely these comments are meant for his children, as they’ve made their position abundantly clear in their attempts to usurp his ability to sell the company. Regardless of whether it’s time for Logan to step aside and make room for his children to take over, the trailer clearly shows that he isn’t going anywhere any time soon.
The Younger Roy Siblings Are Finally a United Front Against Their Father
By the conclusion of season 3, Kendall, Shiv, and Roman finally decided to unite in their efforts to take control of Waystar RoyCo in spite of their father. By combining their voting shares of the company, which were guaranteed to them via their parent’s divorce agreement, they have the power to take control together and thwart their father’s efforts to sell the company. Unfortunately, Logan was one step ahead and managed to revise his previous divorce agreement, thereby stripping his children of their majority voting shares.
Despite their failed attempt, the trailer indicates they will maintain a united front against their father. The eldest son, Connor, even refers to his siblings as “the rebel alliance” against their family patriarch, while he seemingly remains loyal to his father.
As the trailer continues, Kendall, who is no stranger to being ostracized by the family, leans into their new alliance and proclaims to Shiv and Roman that they are the “New gen Roys” and “we have a song to sing.” As the self-proclaimed new generation of Roys, the three youngest siblings appear to be holding firm in their united efforts. It seems they will make yet another attempt to take control of Waystar RoyCo and push their father to the sidelines.
A Reckoning Between Shiv and Tom is on the Horizon
Despite how Shiv has treated her husband, Tom, throughout the entirety of the series, his betrayal is one of the colossal consequences of their marriage. For Shiv, such a betrayal crosses an ultimate line that probably won’t be overlooked.
In the final moments of the trailer for season 4, Tom asks Shiv, “Do you want to talk about what happened?” She doesn’t offer a verbal reply, but the look on her face answers the question well enough. She isn’t happy, and surely, she hasn’t forgotten how he double-crossed her and her brothers. It’s safe to say she’d probably be more accepting of a situation in which Tom cheated with another woman.
While Tom’s actions are the highest betrayal in Shiv’s eyes, there’s an argument to make for why he did what he did. Essentially forced into an open marriage situation in which Shiv seems to be the only one reaping the benefits, Tom expresses his unhappiness to her but to no avail. He clearly felt constantly steamrolled by Shiv and the Roy Family throughout the previous seasons. He took an opportunity to gain high ground and secure his place within the company apart from Shiv. Aligning himself with Logan was a gamble, but one he was obviously willing to take in the long run. However, a reckoning with Shiv is surely on the horizon if the trailer is any indication of what’s to come.
