With production already under way on Stranger Things Season 2, the cast has just gotten a bit bigger. Comedian Brett Gelman has signed on to portray Murray Bauman, who is described as a “disgraced journalist-turned-conspiracy theorist” who comes to Hawkins, Indiana while investigating a cold case. It was not confirmed how many episodes he will appear in.
Variety broke the casting news earlier today, which comes just days after the comedian made headlines for severing his ties with the cable network Adult Swim. The actor had previously appeared in a number of specials for the network, with his most recent being Brett Gelman’s Dinner in America, which aired in July, but he cut ties with the network because of its treatment of women, and due to insensitive comments made by Adult Swim executive vice president Mike Lazzo, who said in a statement that the network doesn’t have many female-created shows because, “women don’t tend to like conflict.”

Brett Gelman joins a slew of new cast members such as Sean Astin, Paul Reiser, Linnea Berthelsen, Sadie Sink, and Dacre Montgomery. Sean Astin is playing the manager of the local Hawkins Radio Shack, while Paul Reiser will play a government official who comes to town to investigate what happened during the first season. Linnea Berthelsen is playing Roman, a damaged young woman who doesn’t actually live in Hawkins, but is connected to the mysterious events of Season 1. Sadie Sink and Dacre Montgomery portray step-siblings Billy and Max.
Season 1 stars Winona Ryder (Joyce Byers) and David Harbour (Jim Hopper) are returning along with all of the young child stars. Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Finn Wolfhard (Mike Wheeler), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin Henderson), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas Sinclair), Natalia Dyer (Nancy Wheeler), Joe Keery (Steve Harrington), Charlie Heaton (Jonathan Byers) and Noah Schnapp (Will Byers) are returning for Season 2, which is set one year after the first season, in 1984. Both Joe Keery and Noah Schnapp have been promoted to series regulars after serving as featured players during the first season of Stranger Things.
