All good things must come to an end, and Stranger Things is unfortunately no exception. First premiering on Netflix back in 2016, the 80s-set horror series became a smash hit for the streamer with very high viewership across all three seasons in addition to widespread acclaim. But just after it was announced that the fourth season will start streaming in May, Netflix revealed the bittersweet news that Stranger Things had also been renewed for a fifth and final season.
“Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for Stranger Things,” the series creators, the Duffer Brothers, said in part in a joint statement shared by Netflix. “At the time, we predicted the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four, but — as you’ll soon see for yourselves — we are now hurtling toward our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; season 5 will be the last.”

The letter added: “There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes. But first we hope that you stay with us as we finish this tale of a powerful girl named Eleven and her brave friends, of a broken police chief and a ferocious mom, of a small town called Hawkins and an alternate dimension known only as the Upside Down. As always, we are grateful for your patience and support.”
Stranger Things 4 Will Be Split Into Two Halves
Netflix
The Duffer Brothers also described season 4 as the most challenging season yet. There was so much story to be told that it required breaking up the season into two parts. It was revealed by Netflix that the first volume will arrive in May with the second half of the season coming in July. It’s not yet clear when season 5 will arrive, but given the wait for Stranger Things 4, we probably shouldn’t count on it coming very soon.
The synopsis for Stranger Things 4 reads: “It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time – and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.”
Since its release in 2016, Stranger Things has garnered over 65 award wins and 175 award nominations, including those from the Emmys, Golden Globes, Grammys, and many others. The three-time Emmy Award Nominee for Best Drama is one of Netflix’s most-watched titles, with season 3 amassing 582 Million view hours ranking as the 2nd Most Popular English-language series in the Netflix Top 10. Stranger Things was created by the Duffer Brothers and is produced by Monkey Massacre Productions & 21 Laps Entertainment. The Duffer Brothers serve as executive producers on the series, alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps Entertainment, and Iain Paterson.
Stranger Things 4: Vol 1 will premiere on May 27, 2022, only on Netflix. Vol. 2 will follow with a premiere date of July 1, 2022. Watch the series at Netflix.com.
