It has been more than 40 years since 9 to 5 was released in theaters, and a new documentary details why workplace inequality that has continued in the years since is no laughing matter. Introducing new music by Dolly Parton, the doc, dubbed Still Working 9 to 5, features new interviews with Parton as well as her fellow 9 to 5 stars Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dabney Coleman. Along with the 9 to 5 stars, the doc also includes interviews with Rita Moreno from the 9 to 5 TV series, Allison Janney from the Broadway musical, and other stars from the TV and stage adaptations. Activists and individuals closely associated with the women’s movement, both now and then, are also featured.

Camille Hardman (HGTV’s Restored, Big Dreamers) and Gary Lane (Hollywood to Dollywood) directed and produced the film. It is executive produced by Larry Lane (Hollywood to Dollywood), Steve Summers (Netflix’s Heartstrings, Christmas on the Square), Shane McAnally (NBC’s Songland and multi Grammy winner), Regina K. Scully (Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, Phoenix Rising), and Geralyn Dreyfous (Allen v Farrow, Truffle Hunters). Oreet Rees (Playground, King Leopold’s Ghost) and Elisa Bonora (Glen Campbell: Here I Am, David Crosby: Remember My Name) edited the feature.

Still Working 9 to 5 Looks at Real-Life Inequality

Colin Higgins directed 9 to 5, co-writing the film with Patricia Resnick. It follows three working women (Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin) getting even with their egotistical, sexist boss (Dabney Coleman). The film was a tremendous success at the box office and serves as one of the most popular and memorable classic comedies of its era, still fondly remembered by fans. 9 to 5 also further solidified Parton as a global sensation with the soundtrack’s theme song, “9 to 5,” serving as one of her biggest hits, spending two weeks in the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
