Only Murders in the Building has been a smash hit on Hulu, and for star Steve Martin it will be the last of his long and successful career. Having been a prolific star from the 1970s, Martin has appeared in a limited number of shows and movies since semi-retiring in 2009, but now it seems like he is ready to hang up his acting boots for good once Only Murders comes to an end.
Of course, it looked like Martin had given up acting when he did announce his first retirement in 2009, but that turned out to be temporary, and it could well be a case that if the right job was offered to him, the comedian could be back on screens again. For now, he told The Hollywood Reporter:

Obviously, Martin seeking out work and being headhunted for a role are two different things. Martin may be clear that once he is done with Only Murders then he won’t actively go hunting out something else, but he didn’t hunt out his current role either. There is also the question of just how long Only Murders will continue, as a third series has already been given the green light, and as long as audiences keep coming back there could be a role for Martin as long as he wants it.
“When this television show is done, I’m not going to seek others. I’m not going to seek other movies. I don’t want to do cameos. This is, weirdly, it.”
Only Murders In The Building Has Been A Huge Hit For Steve Martin and Martin Short
Hulu
Having worked together on multiple projects, old friends Steve Martin and Martin Short have had an unexpected resurgence in popularity thanks to Only Murders in the Building. The series, which centers on three strangers, Martin, Short and Selena Gomez, who live in the same building and have a love of true-crime podcasts. When a murder happens inside their building, they take to being amateur sleuths and are driven on by their desire to make their own podcast and solve the mystery.
The first series of Only Murders was a surprise but well-deserving hit when it debuted on Hulu/Disney+, and earned a number of Emmy nominations, including two that put both Martin and Short in contention to win best actor awards. In addition to its old-timer leads, Selena Gomez adds her own dynamic to the proceedings as well as also producing on the show, and the success of the first season, and now the second, have given season 3 a big mountain to climb to continue to keep the momentum going.
However, there is no doubt that audiences have been loving the combination of characters, situations and the perfect mix of humor and serious drama. After two seasons, the characters have now also endeared themselves to their viewers, and that can only benefit the show moving forward. With the season 3 renewal having only been confirmed in July, it will be next year before we see the show return, but fans still have two final episodes of season 2 to enjoy in the meantime.
