Empire Magazine has given another taste of its upcoming Avatar: The Way of Water issue, this time it is villain flavored! Stephen Lang sat down to give a few details on his returning character, Miles Quaritch, who is not only back but more of a threat than ever!

For those of us that need a refresh, Miles Quaritch started out as Jake Sully’s strict higher-up. As a military commander of the RDA (Resources Development Administration), he was the face of all the villainy of the human race. With his scarred face and tough-guy demeanor, donning a giant mech suit, he was the ultimate antagonist to face off against Jake and the Na’vi. But, like many stories of good triumphing over evil, he met his demise.

After a showdown with Jake and gaining the upper hand, Neytiri shot him down with two arrows. Audiences thought that was the end of him, until we saw a familiar face in the trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water. That is, a familiar face in a new, blue skin! Lang details the character with Empire.

According to Empire, Quartich isn’t the only one with a fresh new look either. He’s joined with an entire set of Recombinants (Recoms), avatars that have been given the memories of human soldiers. This opens up a whole new set of possibilities for RDA, are these other soldiers still very much alive? Are we going to see Quartich saved at the last minute in a flashback from the first movie? Or was he, like the other soldiers, brought back from the dead and in new bodies? Either way, Lang says that this new body makes his character more of a threat.

“Time to wake up!”

Empire and Lang go into further detail of what RDA has been up to in the years between Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water. They have since built an entirely new city, Bridgehead, complete with a factory that 3D prints weapons and other tools to assist them. The stakes are only rising, and with it so is RDA and the shadow they cast over Pandora.

Empire’s Avatar: The Way of Water issue will cover more details and exclusive sneak peeks to the upcoming sequel to James Cameron’s blockbuster titan. The magazine is set to premiere on July 7th and will be advertising exclusive first-looks into the film, featuring interviews with James Cameron himself along with the cast and crew. Meanwhile Avatar: The Way of Water is rocketing to cinemas in December!
