On Feb. 8, The CW will begin broadcasting the final season of The Flash, which will close a cycle for the network and its relationship with DC Comics. Although Superman & Lois will continue, since the end of Arrow in 2020, the television universe of comic book characters has been dwindling until only Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen was left standing.

The departure of the Scarlet Speedster represents quite an event for the so-called Arrowverse, and everyone wants to be part of its last race. Including Stephen Amell, who will return as Oliver Queen in a special episode. However, the actor had a very special request to return, as revealed by showrunner Eric Wallace to TVLine:

Amell will make an appearance in Episode 9, where we’ll also see David Ramsey’s John Diggle and Keiynan Lonsdale’s Wally West, allies of both heroes throughout their history.

“I called up Greg and said, ‘I have a crazy idea. What if Oliver Queen came back….,’ and I pitched the story. He was like, ‘I love it, let me call Stephen.’ So he called Stephen, then called me back: ‘Stephen loves it! Talk to him, pitch him the idea.’ So I got on the phone with Stephen — and this is all happening within a span of 18 hours, mind you — and I walked him through it. He said, ‘I love it. But can we do this extra thing…?’” Wallace continued to explain how Amell wanted to do a specific storyline. “‘Let’s do that! That’s fantastic.’ And the call ended with [Amell saying], ‘I’m in. Let’s make this happen.’ It happened that fast.”

What Will Happen in the Ninth Season of The Flash?

The final season will take place shortly after the war against the Negative Reverse-Flash, which means new enemies will be on the lookout. To face them, Barry must team up with unlikely allies to save Central City in one last race and be forever etched in DC Comics’ history.

In the first episode, Barry and Iris are stuck in the loop that repeats over and over on the same day, and they will have to find a way to escape from there while a new threat falls on Central City, as usual.

Meanwhile, the film version of the character will premiere his solo adventure this same year, by the hand of Ezra Miller and the Argentine Andy Muschietti in The Flash. This film will represent the reboot of the DCU, allowing James Gunn to take over following the conclusion of the initial DCEU.
