It’s Dr. Watson’s time to shine. Deadline reports that CBS wants to put a fresh spin on the Sherlock Holmes story by putting the sidekick into the lead role for a new series called Watson. The series, described as a medical drama with detective elements, is written by Craig Sweeny, who previously worked on Elementary. Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and CBS Studios are behind the project. Sweeny will executive produce alongside Kaplan, Brian Morewitz, and Shäron Moalem MD, PhD.

A series synopsis for Watson has also been revealed, and you can read that below.

The concept of killing off Sherlock Holmes is not entirely new, though it is certainly outside of the norm for most adaptations. Original author Arthur Conan Doyle once wrote a short story, 1893’s “The Final Problem,” which saw Holmes killed in a battle with Moriarty. Fans were not happy and after backlash from readers, the character would later be brought back in “The Hound of the Baskervilles” to pick up where he left off. It remains to be seen if fans will be more receptive to seeing a Sherlock Holmes story these days that kills off the popular character at the very start.

Sherlock Holmes Is Alive and Well in Other Projects

In any case, Sherlock Holmes is still breathing in other adaptations coming up. Henry Cavill plays the character in Enola Holmes 2, reprising his role that he played in the 2020 original. Millie Bobby Brown leads those films as the younger sister of Sherlock as the story also imagines the famous sleuth stepping out of the spotlight, but without killing him off. You can catch Enola Holmes 2 when it premieres on Netflix on Nov. 4, 2022.

For years, there have also been rumors of Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as Sherlock for a new Sherlock Holmes movie. He is also said to be working on spinoffs in development at HBO Max, which, if true, could also suggest that he has another Sherlock Holmes film in the works as well. It’s hard to say what the future is for the film series or the character, but it does seem to be just a matter of time before he’s back on the big screen. The question is if Sherlock Holmes 3 ends up materializing before Watson, but should that happen, it’s clear that many fans would be excited.
