There won’t be a fourth season of Stargirl on The CW, as the series was just recently canceled. The news came as the cast and crew were getting near the end of filming on season 3, and with the final episodes wrapping up, star Brec Bassinger has opened up on what the experience was like. Speaking about the cancelation in an interview with The Wayne Ayers Podcast (per TVLine), Bassinger reveals that she’s actually known about the fate of Stargirl since May, though it had been a rough few months leading up to that point amid conflicting talks about a renewal.

The full podcast is coming out on Wednesday, Nov. 16, but in a quote from the interview, Bassinger explained how she found out what was happening with the series and how the wave of emotions first started, which was when she first caught wind that Stargirl was in serious danger of getting the boot.

Because the show getting canceled wasn’t confirmed just yet, there remained a hope that season 4 would end up happening. That wound up making things difficult as time went by for Bassinger, who had to continue filming without being sure if this would be her final run in the role. She compares the ups and downs of not knowing to an “emotional roller coaster,” so perhaps it was even a relief in some ways when Bassinger finally learned that the cancelation was official.

“I actually found out in May that Stargirl might not be picked up for a fourth season. I was actually flying to an event for Stargirl when I got the news. But that being said, it wasn’t for sure.”

“The next few months… became this emotional roller coaster of, ‘Yeah, I think it’s going to get picked up’ or, ‘Oh, no, we’re pitching to a different streaming service.’ It just became this emotional roller coaster.”

Stargirl Will Have a Satisfying Ending According to the Show’s Creator

The silver lining is that the show’s creative team had been bracing for the series to end, so there were efforts made to deliver a strong season finale that could effectively wrap things up if the show was to come to an end. Stargirl series creator Geoff Johns released a statement when the cancelation was announced to promise fans that they’ll be satisfied with the third and final season, especially with how things end. His statement reads:

Stargirl, based on the DC Comics character, first premiered in 2020. The show follows Courtney Whitmore, a teenager who wields Starman’s cosmic staff to become the newest superhero. Along with Bassinger, the series also starred names including Luke Wilson, Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington, Cameraon Gellman, Neil Hopkins, Joy Osmanski, and Joel McHale.

“Stargirl has always held a special place in my heart for many reasons. With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind and have delivered what I believe to be the best season of Stargirl yet, with complete creative closure.”

The series finale of Stargirl will air on Dec. 7, 2022 on The CW.
