Thanks to Disney, Star Wars fans have been bombarded with new material over the last few years. So far, everything has been set around the time of the original trilogy, or just after, with no further exploration of the characters and times introduced in Disney’s sequel trilogy. Well, according to Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, that is all going to change. Speaking with Empire at the Star Wars Celebration event, there are plans in place to take audiences back to the world of Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, and Kylo Ren.

The likes of The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Book of Boba Fett, as well as the upcoming Andor, are all set around the time of the original trilogy. Whether it be just after or just before. Despite all the projects on the Disney/Star Wars horizon, we have heard little more about the likes of Rey and Ben Solo outside of their trilogy. A trilogy that was met with…mixed results, which likely explains why Lucasfilm are taking its time before once again transporting audiences to this era of a galaxy far, far away.

“We’re moving further beyond the existing sequels as we look to our movie space. The sequel era] is what we talk a lot about in terms of where we’re going with our movies, and just how far out from that we’ll go. That’s very much the space we’re concentrating on.”

It also sounds like any further exploration beyond the sequel trilogy will be saved for the big screen, with Kathleen Kennedy specifically stating that this is something they are thinking about in the studio’s “movie space.” But where would the story go beyond the Disney sequel trilogy? Will Rey be training a new batch of Jedi warriors? Would she find herself hunted across the galaxy for identity fraud after falsely using the name ‘Skywalker’?

There have been whispers and rumors that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson would craft his own trilogy set after the sequel trilogy, and that it would focus on the mysterious force-sensitive “broom boy.” Notably, Kennedy reiterated that Johnson’s trilogy is still in the works, but added again that it might be a while.

Kathleen Kennedy Says Star Wars Will Go on Forever

There are some Star Wars fans who understandably feel that, with so many prequels, sequels, and spinoffs, the magic of the franchise is being watered down. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like things are going to change any time soon, with Kennedy saying that Star Wars “will go on forever."

“Rian had such a gigantic success with Knives Out that he’s very committed to trying to get that done. So it’ll be a while. As you know, we have to work three, five years in advance on what we’re doing. So that’s where that sits.”

Star Wars fans can now return to a galaxy far, far away with Obi-Wan Kenobi, which has now premiered on Disney+.
