C3PO is one of the most iconic droids in the entire Star Wars franchise. Chronologically, C-3PO first appeared in The Phantom Menace, built as a sort of side-project by a young Anakin Skywalker during his early years on Tatooine. He was originally programmed as a protocol droid, completely averse to conflict and combat. However, after leaving Tatooine and as the wars raged on, often found himself in the thick of it alongside another iconic droid, R2-D2.

Played by Anthony Daniels, C-3PO appeared in the prequels, the originals, and the sequels, as well as various Star Wars TV series, and he’s had plenty of great lines throughout. Whether it’s in a crisis situation, or in the midst of tearful reunions, the golden droid always has a ridiculous one liner to lighten the mood — he’s one of the funniest characters of all. Per Collider, Daniels teased earlier this year that the beloved droid will be returning to our screens in the near future, with many speculating that it’ll be in the upcoming Star Wars: A Droid Story. While not much is known yet, Slash Film predicts the production could release sometime mid-2023. Until then, this list ranks C-3PO’s funniest lines from across the galaxy.

7 “You’ll be malfunctioning within a day, you nearsighted scrap pile. And don’t let me catch you following me, begging for help, because you won’t get it!”

     Lucasfilm

One of the pair’s most famous interactions of the franchise, this is said to R2D2 in A New Hope, and sets the tone for their whole relationship in the franchise. R2 has a mission to find Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the two have differing opinions on how best to complete the mission. R2’s idea is to go to him and C-3PO decides the best course of action is to insult his best friend. This line is truly one of the best in A New Hope, and one of C3PO’s best lines of all.

6 “My parts are showing? Oh, my goodness, oh!”

This line is one of many said to R2D2, and it happens in The Phantom Menace. R2 tells C-3PO that he’s naked, and as a droid ever concerned with etiquette and doing things properly, this rattles him. It also shows the strong friendship between the two droids despite C-3PO often losing his patience with R2. In this scene, he’s just the perfect amount of polite and embarrassed, which makes this line one of his best in the entire franchise.

5 “Don’t blame me. I’m an interpreter. I’m not supposed to know a power socket from a computer terminal."

This line is from The Empire Strikes Back, and is said to R2 after he jacks the wrong interface, resulting in a small electric shock. In the Star Wars universe, droids have very specific tasks — as C-3PO rightly states in this quote, his is interpretation and translation. As he says this, C-3PO is metaphorically washing his hands of the whole affair, and refuses to be blamed for any of it despite his know-it-all attitude that comes across in the franchise. For all he claims to know, this quote is a very funny reminder that he doesn’t.

4 “R2-D2, you know better than to trust a strange computer.”

This is another example of C-3PO chastising his best friend. In The Empire Strikes Back, R2 had just repaired the golden droid and was telling him that Lando and his crew had intentionally deactivated the hyperdrive motivator, and that he found this out from the city’s central computer. Threepio was clearly not satisfied with the source of the information as this was his response — he seems to believe computers don’t always tell the truth. In this case, he was proven wrong, making this quote all the more hilarious.

3 “Goodness! Han Solo! It is I, C-3PO! You probably do not recognize me because of the red arm…”

     Lucasfilm / Disney

This line is part of the long-awaited reunion scene in The Force Awakens. Of course, the droid is easily recognizable due to his golden body, but this is said so earnestly, it had to be included on this list. It is also said against the backdrop of an emotional reunion between Han and Leia, showing his complete lack of emotional intelligence. Han and C-3PO have never been the best of friends throughout the franchise, due to their polar opposite personalities, but this moment shows true fondness between the pair — while we can all laugh at the obliviousness of our favorite golden droid!

2 “Sometimes, I just don’t understand human behavior.”

This line is said in A New Hope, and is part of a hilarious interaction between C-3PO and Han Solo. Han is not a fan of Threepio at the best of times, but in this exchange the stakes are high, and he loses his patience with the droid. This is C-3PO’s response to being shouted at by the resident scoundrel of the franchise, and is one of the golden moments in the original movie that started it all.

1 “I suggest a new strategy, R2: let the Wookie win.”

Chewbacca and C-3PO have never gotten along well, as evidenced from one of their first interactions in A New Hope. Threepio is watching over a game between the Wookie and R2-D2, and as his fellow droid is winning, Chewbacca becomes angry. C-3PO chastises him for being a sore loser, but quickly shuts up after Han reminds him of the danger of Wookies (they have a tendency to “pull people’s arms out” if they lose.) C-3PO quickly changes his mind on the whole situation, and this is his definitive advice to R2, presumably because he likes his arms still attached to his body.
