A great villain is needed for a story to prosper. Without one, there would be no true emotional draw, and any tale would perish beneath the absence of a domineering figure looming over a quest for good, peace, or tranquility. The removal of a constant adversary make the hero’s journey far too easy. Of course, villains are not created for the sole purpose of causing chaos: their presence demands that a protagonist must remove themselves from their comfort zone and embrace life’s most distressing moments as an opportunity for growth. A villain and their needs must be as equally understood as their good-doing counterparts. Above all, villains have proven that they are not just critical elements in any form of media, but a joy to hate.

Villains in Star Wars have done more than terrorize the galaxy. They’ve graced the franchise with emotionally devastating impact and have orchestrated a greater feeling of humanity throughout the space opera. Their acts of desolation have given the series some of its most poignant moments. No two villains in Star Wars remain exactly alike. Their own accounts of personal suffering, struggles with coping with their reality, and relentless pasts of dolor have shaped their paths of revenge on individual levels. Star Wars has not always treated its villains with a touch of kindness and has been sure to draw out their misfortune. Here’s a list of the best villains in the Star Wars franchise.

5 Asajj Ventress

     Lucasfilm

Making her debut in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, cunning assassin Asajj Ventress is an embodiment of the ruthlessness that a villain can hold. Her extreme dedication to Count Dooku is a motivation for her apathetic kills and bitter rivalry against her enemies. Her unfortunate early life spent in slavery fuels the ongoing waves of pain that she must carry, as her conflict between betrayal and vengeance results in her committal of crimes. Torture, mass murder, and terrorism flexed the brutal measures that Ventress was willing to take, leaving her to be feared by anyone in her path. Her ability to duel with a lightsaber demonstrates just how skilled she is and how daunting she truly is in combat. Ventress was a groundbreaking step forward for Star Wars as she was the first villainess to enter canon. She commenced a new style of lightsaber combat by being the first to wield two blades at once.

4 Count Dooku

Star Wars has embraced every aspect of politics, including the various personalities that are imperative to create conflict within the socioeconomic arts and sciences of governments. Count Dooku’s firm understanding of political inner workings used his outlook as a form of manipulation. Dooku’s age did not dare deter him. He was equipped with abilities commonly used by both Jedi and Sith; mind tricks and the use of the Force were found among his attacks, physical or not. Dooku was equally proficient with a lightsaber as he was with his carefully selected words. Awareness of the power that the wealthy hold above other demographics was a direct pipeline to his inclination towards life’s most luxe offerings. He knew it was wrong to hold these desires, yet did not fend them off. His past of being born into wealth resulted in a taste of affluence spiraling into a lifelong love affair. He knew that if he were to depart from the way of the Jedi, he could form attachments with his belongings. Dooku’s tactful decipherment of the Jedi made it possible for him to pinpoint their vulnerabilities. A more observant villain, his reservation gave him an advantage over those around them. Dooku knew that knowledge truly was power.

3 Darth Maul

     Lucasfilm Animation

Lust’s chokehold on Darth Maul twisted the state of his morality. His thriving from the most hateful parts of his being propelled him even deeper into a life filled with obsessions. Maul’s preoccupation with revenge and the means of seeking it all but cannibalized him. His disheartening upbringing and transition into Sith Lord cut him out to be more than a slickly-designed villain. Most outstandingly, the constant intergalactic game of cat-and-mouse between Maul and Obi-Wan Kenobi fed into his reputation of relentlessness. Across his iterations found in live-action, written, and animated Star Wars media, Darth Maul’s depiction in each attributed to the complexities that lie beneath the surface. He was given an evolutionary arc that grew as his story progressed. His introduction as a lesser-known villain in The Phantom Menace soon paved the way forward for him to shadow over the series as one of the most notorious in the galaxy. Maul’s role as a villain is not a self-fulfilling prophecy; his dynamics with those around him are a constant reminder that his relationships allow him to be compelling on his own, or with others. His outstanding sabersmanship insisted that he was an accomplished dueler, resulting in some of the series’ most signature battles.

2 Emperor Palpatine

Weasley and sly, Emperor Sheev Palpatine has taken bold risks in order to achieve his reign across the stars. His masterful manipulation resulted in the alteration of how the Dark Side of the Force was felt by Jedi and was able to bury his true intentions beneath political action. The slow burn of his regime presented Emperor Palpatine as a calculating villain. His patience in long-term planning promoted him as one of the most consistent adversaries found across most Star Wars media. There’s no up-front nefariousness to be found. Instead, his conquest is through others. Emperor Palpatine was in no dire rush to see himself conquer the universe. His slow-burn and calculated planning was instrumental to his rise to power, and the patience and timing executed throughout his reign presented him as a more deliberate villain. His ongoing longevity and unlimited power have instilled Emperor Palpatine as an unavoidable menace throughout the saga. The Sith Lord was so engulfed in his own pure evil that he was unable to be saved from himself. Sociopathic tendencies lead to the destruction of others in exchange for the Sith’s personal victories. His tireless viciousness has pronounced him as one of the most prominent villains in Star Wars.

1 Darth Vader

     Lucasfilm Ltd.Disney

The tale of a tragedy is told through the story of Darth Vader. Perhaps one of the most emotional and nuanced villains in science fiction, Anakin Skywalker’s fated downfall and self-implosion reinvented him as the galaxy’s most feared Sith Lord. He shows no fear as his brutality consumes him, blinded by anger and hatred. Vader’s impulsive nature mellowed out into pragmatism when in search of allies to the Empire. He profits off of intimidation and fear as copes with the loss of his former identity — someone who he claimed to have killed himself. What truly stands out about Vader is that his demise comes along with an evergreen heartache. Not a sympathetic villain, but a pitied one in his fledgling years of succumbing to the Dark Side. The cost of losing everything — an able body, his loved ones, and his sanity — carved him into an unforgiving and merciless miscreant. There’s no defending the actions taken by Vader as his reign terrorized anyone below him, and his disregard for the fragility of life was what made him so terrifying.
