A new teaser for the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard was unveiled during the 56th Star Trek Day celebration on September 8, 2022, along with a trail of replicated bread crumbs about what is in store for Sir Patrick Stewart’s Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine, Michelle Hurd’s Raffi Musiker, and the returning Star Trek: The Next Generation cast — and Hurd dropped a bombshell, Picard’s third season will be exploring “the criminal underbelly of that world” in a way we’ve never seen before.

Moderated by Star Trek Day co-host Paul F. Tompkins, who plays Counselor Migleemo on Star Trek: Lower Decks, the Star Trek Day celebration featured Stewart, Ryan, and Hurd answering questions about what fans can expect from each of the actor’s respective characters in Season 3. Although a new teaser was introduced by Stewart on-stage during the live-streamed celebration as well, the arrival of the U.S.S. Titan probably didn’t surprise anyone who follows the Jonathan Frakes spoiler mill. Instead, the biggest Season 3 bombshell came when Tompkins asked Hurd about Raffi’s character arc (after all, the character has gone from Picard’s former first officer with an addiction problem to someone who found lesbian love in a hopeless place with Seven).

When Tompkins asked Hurd where we see Raffi in the third season, the Ash vs. Evil Dead actress responded, “Raffi has quite a fun journey.” Hurd continued on, “This is a big kind of little reveal I am going to give you. Raffi is going to have quite an adventure this season because we are going to explore – like Star Trek has never done before – the criminal underbelly of that world.”

The third season of Picard will be the first time that Star Trek has explored the criminal element of its world in any great detail, according to Hurd. However, die-hard Trekkies probably remember when Commander Miles O’Brien had to work with Section 31 (yes, that Section 31) for an intelligence-gathering mission in Star Trek’s criminal underbelly or even last season of Star Trek: Discovery when Captain Michael Burnham and Book both used criminal courier contacts to gather information.
