In a Tweet sent on August 10, 2022, the Star Trek on Paramount+ Twitter account shared an image that celebrated the upcoming third season of Star Trek: Lower Decks: the label for a box of raisins harvested at the Boimler Family Vineyards. In addition to including imagery of Bradward Boimler (Jack Quaid) and several assistant farmhands at the family vineyard, the image calls to mind the classic design of the red boxes used to package Sun-Maid brand raisins. (Because Star Trek Twitter is all about promoting the benefits of eating dried grapes and raising raisin awareness now… it’s true, just ask Twitter!)
In the Lower Decks season two episode “wej Duj,” we learned in dialogue that Ensign Boimler’s family owned a vineyard, and now, the Modesto vineyard joke is paying off. Naturally, this led many viewers to assume that, like Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart) on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard, Boimler had grown up on a vineyard that harvested grapes for wine.

However, in a clip from the Lower Decks season three premiere episode, “Grounded,” which was released in the fiftieth episode of The Ready Room, it was revealed that it wasn’t wine that was being produced at the vineyard. Instead of being crushed, the grapes at the Boimler Family Vineyard are dried! Also revealed in season two’s “wej Duj” was the location of the Boimler family farm: Modesto, California (and it’s worth noting that referring to Modesto as the “moon of San Francisco” is deeply offensive).

Interestingly enough, the mountains visible on the horizon beyond the Boimler vineyard are recognizable as those located in California’s Central Valley, even though the series is set nearly four hundred years in the future. The design of the Boimler Family Farm box Tweeted by the Star Trek on Paramount+ Twitter account also pays homage to this geographic location, given that Sun-Maid raisins are famously marked as being “California sun-dried.”
Also visible on the Boimler Family Farm label are several of the lady farm hands that appear in the episode clip released through The Ready Room. In the clip, these workers go out of their way to attract the romantic attention of a completely indifferent Bradward, utilizing various pretenses in an attempt to lure him to a secluded corner of the vineyard. However, the Cerritos ensign has no interest in any of their come-ons and is only moved by the arrival of his fellow Lower Decker, Ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome)… After last season’s cliffhanger… Is she there to form a Raisin-themed Family Band? Doubt it, but could be fun!
What incredible adventures are in store for them as they attempt to clear the name of Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis)? The answers will arrive with the season premiere of Lower Decks, which will be available for streaming on Paramount+ on August 25, 2022.
