Netflix saw the release of its most successful series last year, as Squid Game has reached heights even Stranger Things failed to match. The series follows hundreds of cash-strapped players accepting an invitation to compete in children’s games. Inside, the tempting prize of millions upon millions of dollars awaits; however, there are deadly high stakes within the competition as participants fight for their life.

The series saw a big night at the 74th Annual Prime Time Emmy Awards Monday night, with Hwang Dong-hyuk winning for Outstanding Direction and Lee Jung-jae winning Best Actor in a Drama Series. Deadline spoke to the director and cast during their time on the red carpet at the ceremony, and Hwang Dong-hyuk teased a few things regarding Jung-jae’s character in the upcoming second season.

“I mean the biggest change will be the change of [Lee Jung-jae’s] character. Because he’s a different guy in season 2. You know he turned his hair color to red and he became like something more like, serious, more like going for revenge so his character will be totally different.”

Lee Jung-jae’s career is just getting started, as Squid Game was truly the breakout role of a lifetime. Next, the 49-year-old actor is headed to a galaxy far, far away with a new Star Wars series titled The Acolyte. The official synopsis reads: “Star Wars series that takes viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.” The show should be a big change for the expanding franchise and Jung-jae as he continues to rise in popularity.

The difficulty of getting Squid Games made has long been documented following the success of the South Korean series. However, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk never predicted the show’s triumph, telling The Hollywood Reporter he feels it’s a miracle to receive several Emmy nominations.

Dong-hyuk will have no problems finding investors now, as Squid Game is the most popular Netflix series of all time, along with capturing two Emmys in the major categories of the awards ceremony. Squid Game seemingly continues to make history every chance it gets, and fans should expect nothing less from the upcoming second season of the show.

“This long journey that Squid Game has been on is like a dream. Nobody wanted to make it back in 2009 when I was first writing the script and there was no investor, but now we have 14 nominations at the Emmy Awards, which is the most prestigious award in the U.S., and I am nominated for both writing and directing. For me, this is more dramatic than [protagonist] Gi-hun winning the Squid Game. It’s like a miracle.”
