Netflix has begun its annual Tudum Festival, showcasing everything new coming to the global streaming giant. However, Squid Game got in on the action a little early, bringing fans back to the beloved universe with a never-before-seen clip from the first season. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator and director of the show, embarked on his journey with the series last year. Squid Game quickly became the most popular show ever to release on Netflix, surpassing series like Stranger Things which reigned dominant for years.

Although the show was filled with action, betrayals, and heart-pounding drama, the new scene takes a different approach. Dong-hyuk speaks to audiences before the reveal, teasing the new stories that will come from the eventual second season. “Hello, I’m Hwang Dong-hyuk, the director of Squid Game. I’d like to thank all the Netflix fans around the world again for loving Squid Game,” he says. “Please look forward to season two, which will be filled with all-new stories. But in the meantime, I’ve prepared a small gift for the fans waiting for Squid Game season two.” He continues, “Let’s take a look now.” The deleted scene and Dong-hyuk’s introduction can be found from the official Squid Game Twitter account below.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Compared to what the series is known for, the Squid Game deleted scene seems relatively tame. In the clip, we see a man carrying two fish inside a small bag, bringing them into his apartment, and releasing them into a bowl as he stares at the glass. From the outside, we see a man staring at his window. He wears a hat but strongly resembles Lee Jung-jae’s lead character. It’s hard to tell what point in the series the scene would’ve taken place, and it may be near the show’s end. Regardless, it’s understandable why it was deleted, as it didn’t add anything to the plot of season one, although it could be something explored in the next iteration.

When Can Fans Expect Squid Game Season Two?

Although Squid Game was a massive hit, a second season wasn’t always a sure thing. Hwang Dong-hyuk created the project, and it took years to get the series off the ground, meaning he had no real plans to continue the story. However, Netflix is eager for more, and a second season was renewed last June.

Dong-hyuk continues to write the script for the second part of the series. However, that could take a while due to the intricacies involved with the show. Expect to see Squid Game return to Netflix in 2023 at the earliest, although it could be pushed to 2024 if any significant delays occur.
