Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, is now working on his next series… which will be about the making of Squid Game. Per Deadline, Dong-hyuk is planning a new satire series that will follow the creation of Squid Game and how it became a global sensation overnight. The creator teased that it will lampoon his personal experience of being “thrust into the limelight.” Perhaps fittingly, the new series is tentatively titled The Best Show on the Planet.
Last year, it certainly seemed like Squid Game was at least the most popular show on the planet. When it debuted on Netflix in September, it became an instant success, amassing more than 1.65 billion viewing hours within its first month of streaming. It has since become Netflix’s most-watched series ever, and that was in addition to garnering widespread acclaim with a 94% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The series also made a splash at the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards with several major awards won.

Dong-hyuk created, wrote, and directed Squid Game. The series tells the story of a dangerous contest where 450+ players compete for a chance to attain vast wealth by winning deadly versions of children’s games. It stars Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-joon, HoYeon Jung, O Yeong-su, Heo Sung-tae, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Joo-ryoung.
Squid Game Will Return for Season 2
Netflix
After the success of Squid Game on Netflix, Dong-hyuk has teased a second season. In December, he confirmed that there were talks at the streamer for not only season 2 but a potential third season as well. No plot details have been divulged for season 2, which hasn’t yet been officially greenlit as negotiations continue, but Dong-hyuk has confirmed that he plans to bring back Lee Jung-jae and Lee Byung-hun to reprise their roles from season 1. We can presume that the second season will also be carrying over some of the same themes explored in season 1.
“For this project and in future projects, it’s impossible not to consider the political polarization, the cultural differences and difficulties, as well as environmental climate changes that have been happening. I will be forced to observe and criticize and continue to handle these topics in future projects,” Hwang previously told Deadline.
Optimistic about the success of the series opening doors for others like it, the creator went on to add, “My hope is that a work like Squid Game in a little way has opened the door. I hope American audiences give the piece a chance and that you read the subtitles and watch without dubbing. We’re hoping that we open that opportunity."
Hwang Dong-hyuk has other projects up his sleeve as well, beyond Squid Game season 2 and The Greatest Show on the Planet. He is said to be working on a feature film based on the novel Pape Satan Aleppe: Chronicles of a Liquid Society by Italian essayist Umberto Eco. None of these projects have an official release date at this time.
