Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk hopes to have the second series of the hit Netflix survival drama ready to stream by the end of 2024. In a new interview with Variety, Hwang Dong-hyuk has said that he plans to return to South Korea to begin writing Squid Game Season 2 and return audiences back to the violent world in a few years. While it may seem to be quite a long wait, we’re sure it’ll just fly by.
The first season of Squid Game took the world by storm when Netflix released it back in September 2021. Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, who shopped the idea around for over a decade before adapting his feature film idea into a series for the streaming giant, Squid Game stars Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, O Yeong-su, Wi Ha-joon, Jung Ho-yeon, Heo Sung-tae, Anupam Tripathi and Kim Joo-ryoung. The series centers on a contest in which 456 players, drawn from different walks of life but each deeply in debt, play a set of children’s games with deadly consequences in the hopes of winning a 45.6 billion Won prize.

Since its release, Squid Game has been met with much critical acclaim and international attention, winning all manner of awards and becoming Netflix’s most-watched series. The show has even caught the attention of filmmaking legend Steven Spielberg (which has not necessarily been a good thing for the Jurassic Park director), leaving Hwang Dong-hyuk feeling starstruck.
This proposed release date of 2024 comes soon after Hwang Dong-hyuk provided a slightly more downbeat update on Squid Game Season 2. “There will be more great games, that’s all I can say,” the writer revealed. “I’m just still brainstorming and collecting the ideas for Season 2. I haven’t even started with the writing yet.” It seems that Hwang Dong-hyuk has since landed on an idea and plans to get to work as soon as possible.
Netflix Has Big Plans for the World of Squid Game
Netflix
While Squid Game works perfectly well as a standalone story, Netflix clearly has big plans for the show, with the platform hoping to launch a shared Squid Game universe. Netflix co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos has recently hinted at much more beyond just a second series, saying, “Absolutely. The ‘Squid Game’ universe has just begun.”
But what of Squid Game Season 2? Well, for now, everything remains a mystery, but Hwang Dong-hyuk has previously revealed that the show’s return could focus on a familiar villain.
Squid Game Season 1 is available to watch on Netflix.
