On Thursday, July 21st, 2022 at San Diego Comic-Con, Spider-Verse co-creator and prolific Marvel Comics writer Dan Slott was honored for his work with an Inkpot Award. He joins the ranks of many additional Marvel creators for their contributions to the genre that defines all movie box office hits, superhero comics!
Slott received his Inkpot Award during his spotlight panel, “Spotlight on Dan Slott.” The Inkpot Award is an annual award bestowed by Comic-Con International. The first Inkpot Awards took place in 1974. The Inkpot Award aims to honor individual creators “for their contributions to the worlds of comics, science/fiction fantasy, film, television, animation, and fandom services.”

Other Marvel Comics creators to have been honored with the Inkpot Award over the years include Jason Aaron, the current writer on The Avengers, Gail Simone, the writer who redefined Deadpool, and Kyle Baker, artist on Truth (the Captain America miniseries that heavily informed 2021’s Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier). And it isn’t just Marvel Comics creators that have received Inkpot Awards: in 2017, Marvel Studios Head-Boss-in-Charge Kevin Feige was honored.

In addition to being the writer behind The Amazing Spider-Man storyline that served as the inspiration for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Slott has written many additional Marvel Comics. These include recent runs on Fantastic Four as well as GLA: Misassembled, a run that redefined The Great Lakes Avengers and Squirrel Girl (R.I.P. Monkey Joe).

Slott’s Marvel Comics writing credits also include She-Hulk, a series that (judging by the trailers we’ve seen so far) influenced the upcoming Disney+ show, and The Superior Spider-Man, a run that saw Peter Parker’s brain being invaded by the late Doctor Octopus. And he’s even done some work for the Distinguished Competition, having co-written JLA: Classified with Dan Jergens, among some other DC Comics work.
If you want to see Slott in action, you can check out the episode of Marvel’s 616 called “The Marvel Method,” available for streaming on Disney+ now. The episode features footage of Slott as he plays his part in getting an issue of Marvel Comics to print. However, it is worth noting that this “documentary” is for entertainment purposes and presents a dramatized version of the comics writing process.
Additional Inkpot Award winners announced during SDCC 22 include Cecil Castellucci, whose comic credits include Shade, The Changing Girl, and Jock, artists on the Comixology Original Snow Angels.
