The achievement by Spider-Man: No Way Home is even more impressive considering that the MCU movie has not been released to theaters in China, a market that has become hugely influential over the last few years.

The financial success that Spider-Man: No Way Home has found is thanks in no small part to the wider Marvel franchise’s gradual unleashing of the multiverse. And the crowd-pleasing cameos that come with it. The story finds Tom Holland’s Peter Parker struggling to live with his secret identity exposed. In desperation, he turns to his friend and superhero colleague Doctor Strange, asking The Master of the Mystic Arts to use his magic and make everyone forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Thanks to Peter’s infamous inability to stop talking, the spell goes awry, opening up the multiverse and allowing several heroes and villains from prior Spider-Man franchises to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

These heroes and villains include actors and characters from prior Spider-Man franchises, including Jamie Foxx as The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s Electro, Willem Dafoe as Spider-Man’s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina as Spider-Man 2’s Doctor Octopus. Alongside the various supervillains, Spider-Man: No Way Home provides a moment that has surely achieved the most applause from audiences, bringing Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire back into the fray as their respective iterations of our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

After a series of delays, Spider-Man: No Way Home finally hit theaters in the United States on December 17, as part of Phase Four of the MCU. The movie was met with rave reviews and is now considered by many to be the best Spider-Man movie ever made.

The multiversal shenanigans, and thus no doubt the box office success, with continue with the upcoming Marvel sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Benedict Cumberbatch reprises the role of The Master of the Mystic Arts and continues to explore the multiverse, with a recent trailer released during the Super Bowl teasing even more of the kinds of cameos and adventure that has led Spider-Man: No Way Home to overtake Avatar. Of course, the Avatar franchise will be no slouch when it comes to potentially box office dominating sequels…

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 6, 2022. Avatar meanwhile will receive its first sequel in 2022, with further installments following in 2024, 2026, and 2028.
