Spider-Man: No Way Home is perhaps this year’s most anticipated film, and the global opening day box office returns have gone on to prove it so. Amidst rising concerns regarding the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 pandemic, the third installment in Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man series has earned a whopping $121.5 million on opening day. The film has thus almost set a record with its opening day earnings, which is the second-highest of all time, surprisingly beating Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. The only movie that has Spider-Man: No Way Home beat is its predecessor, Avengers: Endgame.
The hype regarding the film was insane and was not just a much-awaited film for the community, but for others as well. So far, the reaction of viewers go on to show that the hype was well deserved. Furthermore, the film currently has one of the highest Rotten Tomatoes scores of the MCU installments, at 94%. The only MCU film to beat Spider-Man: No Way Home is the 2018 film Black Panther, which also earned a Best Picture nomination. CinemaScore has rated it A+, making it the highest-rated live-action Spider-Man film on the site, and putting it on par with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The opening day earnings project a total of $242 to 247.5 million over three days, which would make it the most successful film of the pandemic era. Currently, the only competition Spider-Man: No Way Home has in terms of fellow releases is Guillermo Del Toro’s Nightmare Alley, the neo-noir psychological thriller which many believe is worthy of an Oscar nomination, starring the likes of Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, and Willem Dafoe. It is Del Toro’s first film since his Academy Award-winning 2017 film The Shape of Water.
Apart from the content of the film, Spider-Man: No Way Home has also turned heads with its soundtrack, created by Michael Giacchino. The soundtrack was released on streaming platforms yesterday. Giacchino has collaborated with director Jon Watts on all three of the MCU Spider-Man films, and has shared his two cents about the soundtrack release:
Spider-Man: No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, and J. K. Simmons, along with other notably exciting returning cast members. The movie is now playing in movie theaters. If you have managed to avoid spoilers up until this point without seeing the movie, you might want to get out there soon, because it’s inevitable that you’ll see them online.
It really has been special to take this three-movie ride with Peter Parker and our talented director, Jon Watts. Over the course of the films, Peter grows from a typical teenager with everyday angst and awkwardness that so many of us had at that age, to a more confident young adult who understands his great responsibility. The added bonus of being able to travel and play with the multiverse brought me back several years reminding us all why we all love this character in the first place. It was an honor to add to the legacy of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
