Although Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse releases in six months (June 3, 2023), the computer-animated superhero sequel has been the talk of the town ever since the release of the trailer. The audience is hyped to see all the different versions of Spider-Man gather in one movie and fight against the new villain, The Spot. Even though it’s only the second movie in the franchise, senior animator Ere Santos has revealed the movie originally featured an Avengers: Endgame-like ending.
We’re excited to see what the final product will look like in our movie theaters this summer. The recent posters have unleashed closer looks at Miles Morales and the other Spider-People we can expect to see. Indeed, the Across the Spider-Verse voice cast is stacked with some of the hottest names in Hollywood right now. Who are the voice actors behind all these amazing characters?
Shameik Moore — Miles Morales
Netflix
The main superhero of the Across the Spider-Verse is voiced by actor/singer/rapper Shameik Moore, who gained recognition with his portrayal of Malcolm in the 2015 film Dope. Moore then starred in the Netflix musical series The Get Down, which unfortunately got canceled after one season. His musical skills came in handy, as he recorded a cover of “Joy to the World” for the movie A Very Spidey Christmas.
Hailee Steinfeld — Ghost-Spider
Marvel Studios
Hailee Steinfeld is no stranger to the superhero genre, considering her portrayal of Kate Bishop in the MCU Hawkeye series. The animated Spider-Man franchise knows her, however, as Gwen Stacy a.k.a Ghost Spider. According to the newly released images, it seems that Gwen is ready to take Miles on a new adventure in Across the Spider-Verse, and she’ll also finally meet his parents.
Oscar Isaac — Spider-Man 2099
Disney Platform Distribution
Although Oscar Isaac took part in Into the Spider-Verse as well, his cameo was kept secret until after the movie released. The actor will officially return for a more important role in the sequel as a new alternate version of the web-slinger: Spider-Man 2099. He’s the leader of a Spider-Force, tasked with protecting the Multiverse. Audiences are most understandably hyped to hear Isaac as Spider-Man 2099, due to both the actor’s abilities and also a new dark side of Spidey. Like Steinfeld, Isaac isn’t new to the Marvel scene, most recently taking on the titular role in the Moon Knight Disney+ series.
Brian Tyree Henry — Jefferson Davis
Best known for his role as Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles in the FX comedy-drama series Atlanta, Brian Tyree Henry is also one of the many talents in the Across the Spider-Verse cast. His casting as Jefferson Davis, Miles’ father, was announced back in June 2017. The Emmy-nominated actor is surely reprising his role in the upcoming sequel. Marvel fans, of course, will likely recognize him as Phastos in Eternals.
Jake Johnson — Peter B. Parker
Fox
During their CinemaCon presentation in 2018, Sony Pictures revealed that Jake Johnson would be the voice of Peter Parker in Into the Spider-Verse. Although it was uncertain whether the actor would return for the sequel, Johnson confirmed contract negotiations back in 2021, and now it’s certain he’s returning for Across the Spider-Verse. The older, disheveled mentor will be definitely needed. In terms of live-action roles, you’ll likely recognize Johnson from his starring role in New Girl.
Issa Rae — Spider-Woman
HBO Enterprises, Warner Bros. Television Distribution
Now an actress, producer, writer, and comedian, Issa Rae first garnered attention for her YouTube web series Awkward Black Girl. She has a thriving career at HBO, with critically acclaimed shows such as Insecure. Jumping to the big screen, Rae is also set to appear in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. But, in 2021, she was announced to voice Jessica Drew a.k.a Spider-Woman in Across the Spider-Verse.
Daniel Kaluuya — Spider-Punk
Universal PicturesOt
Daniel Kaluuya was also announced to join the cast in November 2022 as Hobart “Hobie” Brown, a.k.a Spider-Punk. The actor has a rich repertoire of critically acclaimed movies such as Get Out, Nope, and Black Panther, and he’s certainly about to add another Marvel title to the list. Spider-Punk is a homeless teenager, who gets bitten by a spider due to Norman Osborn’s toxic waste-dumping. After gaining powers, he decides to join the oppressed and revolt against Osborn.
Luna Lauren Vélez — Rio Morales
Showtime
Luna Lauren Vélez is reprising her role as Miles’ mother, Rio Morales. As it appears in the recent trailer, Rio will deeply worry about her son and will want to make sure he remembers his roots. In a conversation with Miles and Gwen, she tells them: “Wherever you go from here, you have to promise to take care of that little boy for me. Make sure he never forgets where he came from. And he never doubts that he’s loved. And he never lets anyone tell him that he doesn’t belong there.” Let’s see if their mother-son relationship will develop further in Across the Spider-Verse. In addition the Spider-Man film, Vélez can be seen in Dexter, Oz, and Ugly Betty.
Jason Schwartzman — The Spot
Fox Searchlight Pictures
The villain of the upcoming sequel was finally revealed in the summer of 2022, and it’s none other than The Spot, who will be voiced by the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World star and frequent Wes Anderson collaborator, Jason Schwartzman. Well, who is The Spot exactly? The villain is basically an experiment gone wrong, which resulted in the villain being made entirely of portals. The Spot can teleport his rivals anywhere through multiple dimensions. It seems that the antagonist will be present for both Across the Spider-Verse and its sequel.
Jorma Taccone — The Vulture
NBC
Jorma Taccone first played the Green Goblin and Spider-Man (Earth-67) in Into The Spider-Verse, but in the sequel, he’s lent his voice to Adrian Toomes, a.k.a The Vulture. Some of the new footage from Across the Spider-Verse has teased a heated battle between Rae’s Spider-Woman and Taccone’s Renaissance-era Vulture. The villain is an engineering genius who has built himself a suit that allows him to fly at high-speed. He’s also one of the founding members of Sinister Six, a group of supervillains. Last year, Taccone played Pee-Wee Herman in Weird: The Al Yanjovic Story.
Shea Whigham — George Stacy
ABC
Shea Whigham, best known for his portrayal of Roger Dooley in Agent Carter, has been added as the voice for George Stacy, Gwen’s father. As a member of the New York Police Department, it seems that Stacy will play a bigger part in Across the Spider-Verse than he did in the first movie. He’s unaware that his daughter is the secretly operating vigilante Spider-Woman, who has saved his life a couple of times.
Greta Lee — Lyla
FX
Last but not least, although first credited as Interesting Person #2, Greta Lee is now confirmed to reprise her role as Lyla in Across the Spider-Verse. Lyla is a futuristic hologram that was programmed as artificial intelligence for Spider-Man to gather general information. She teleports herself around the environment and is in a relationship with Spider-Man 2099.
