Further Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse details have now been teased and reveal that Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099, will play a leading role in the animated sequel. Coming courtesy of Empire Magazine, writer Phil Lord revealed that Spider-Man 2099 will be the one to take charge of the rag-tag band of Spider-Variants as they attempt to fix the madness of the multiverse. And it will be no easy task.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will see an assortment of variants coming together to face supervillain The Spot, voiced by Jason Schwartzman. They include the likes of Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy aka Spider-Gwen, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, aka older Spider-Man, Issa Rae as the pregnant Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman, and Daniel Kaluuya as Hobart “Hobie” Brown aka Spider-Punk
“Miguel O’Hara is the leader of a band of fighters that are trying to clean up the consequences of the collider explosion at the end of the first movie. And as you can imagine, it’s really hard to lead a bunch of people who have never been led [laughs].”
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
If that were not enough for Spider-Man 2099 to deal with, the sequel will also include Ben Reilly, aka the Scarlet Spider, Cyborg Spider-Woman, and Takuya Yamashiro as the “Japanese Spider-Man” from the 1978 Spider-Man series.
Bringing this team together is sure to prove difficult, practically and intellectually, but here’s hoping that Spider-Man 2099 has the patience to do it.
Lord & Miller Have Revealed Details of the Animation Ambition Behind Across the Spider-Verse
Sony Pictures Releasing
Writers and producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have teased the sheer level of animation ambition that has gone into bringing the Spider-Verse to life this time around. “The first film had one animation style that dominates the movie. This movie has six," Lord revealed. “So we’re taking those tools, adding all the things we learned on The Mitchells Vs The Machines, and then growing them further to accommodate the ambition of this movie. Which is to wow you every time you enter a new environment, and also to make sure that the style of the movie reflect the story, and that the images are driven by feelings, as opposed to some egg-headed art project. Which it also is, by the way!”
“The two that you saw in the teaser trailer were what’s called Earth-50101, which we’re calling ‘Mumbattan’ – that’s based on an Indian comic-book look – and Nueva York from Spider-Man 2099’s world,” added Miller, before revealing further details of how each universe will differ from the last. “That’s based on Syd Mead-style illustrations of what the future might look like. There’s also Gwen’s world, which is Earth-65. And that was a watercolour-wash style that’s reminiscent of the covers of her comic books.”
Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled to be released on June 2, 2023, with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse set to be released in March 2024.
