Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse writers and producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have teased the conflict that will occur between Shameik Moore’s Miles Morales and Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099 in the upcoming animated sequel. While not quite the villain of the piece (that honor falls to B-movie bad guy The Spot), Miller does state that Miles and the Spider-Man variant from an alternate future will not see eye-to-eye.
Introduced at the end of 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Oscar Isaac will have a much larger role in the follow-up as Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099. The leader of the Spider-Forces, a group of Spider-people from alternate worlds, it was expected that Miles would work alongside his fellow arachnid-themed brethren, but it seems that this will not be the case. At all.
“He’s not the villain of the movie, but he’s sort of an antagonist to Miles because they both think that what they’re doing is the right thing.”

Thanks to the recent trailer, we now have a much better idea of what to expect when Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swings into theaters next year. The animated sequel finds Miles Morales returning for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga. After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse stars Shameik Moore as Miles Morales/Spider-Man, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy / Spider-Woman, Jason Schwartzman as the Spot, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker / Spider-Man, Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara / Spider-Man 2099, Issa Rae as Jessica Drew / Spider-Woman, and Daniel Kaluuya as Hobart “Hobie” Brown / Spider-Punk.
“I like the villains best when they reflect the journeys of the hero — sort of a dark mirror of the protagonist. And I think Spot’s no different. He wants to be seen as legitimate. He’s a character that has a silly costume and is not always seen as the top tier of Spider-Man foes, but like all of us, he wants to be taken seriously.”
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled to be released on June 2, 2023. A sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is all ready to follow and is set to be released in March 2024.
